MIAMI -- US film star Wesley Snipes faces up to three years in jail after a jury found him guilty on tax-related misdemeanor charges, the Justice Department said Friday.
"A jury today found Wesley Trent Snipes guilty on three misdemeanor charges for failing to file income tax returns," the department said in a statement.
"Snipes was acquitted on felony charges of conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and presenting a fraudulent claim for payment to the IRS," it added.
"Mr. Snipes now faces up the three years in federal prison for his willful failure to comply with the law," said prosecutor Robert O'Neill, quoted in the Justice Department statement.
A sentencing date has not been set. Snipes faces up to a year's jail for each of the misdemeanor charges.
Snipes shot to fame in popular Hollywood movies including the "Blade" action series and "White Men Can't Jump."
Two other defendants in the case, Douglas Rosile and Eddie Ray Kahn, were found guilt of the more serious charges of conspiracy to defraud the IRS and presenting a fraudulent claim for payment.
Rosile had prepared tax returns for Snipes and other clients of a Florida-based "tax protestor organization" run by Kahn.
