MANILA, Philippines?Orestes Ojeda, whose real name is Luis Pagalilauan, was introduced in the movie, ?Zoom Zoom Superman,? starring Ariel Ureta in 1973. From then on until ?Sanib,? directed by Celso Ad. Castillo in 2003, the actor acted in films of all genres?action, comedy, sex, drama, horror?name it, Orestes has done it (almost 70 films in 30 years)!

He has been directed by important filmmakers like Ishmael Bernal in ?Broken Marriage? and ?City After Dark,? Celso Ad. Castillo in his trail-blazing ?Nympha,? and Lino Brocka in ?Inay.?

Entrepreneurship

Throughout his career, Orestes was no party animal. Not many were aware that he was setting the groundwork for his art dealership. Being a graduate of the Philippine School of Business Administration, it was only natural that he leaned towards entrepreneurship.

We met him again recently at the opening of the exhibit of an exciting, relatively new artist, Joy Mallari (until Feb. 15 at Serendra). Orestes was tall and lean, and still had the sparkling eyes and ready smile. The years apparently have treated him well.

Art Verite at the high-end Serendra at Fort Bonifacio is his newest gallery. Art Xchange at the Glorietta was his first venture in a mall. ?I was lucky,? he tells us, ?that Malang decided to vacate his West Gallery at Glorietta in 2005, and I took over the space.?

Louie, as he is known in art circles, has been an art collector and dealer since the ?90s.

First gallery

He tells us that he opened his very first gallery in 1997 in a building on Kamias st. He has dealt in Malangs and Ang Kiukoks, as well as new talents. ?There is now a demand for new artists,? he states.

Although he still reminisces wistfully about the good, old days of Philippine movies, Orestes says, ?Baka hindi ko na kaya ang puyatan at ang stress!?
