MANILA, Philippines?A great spiritual teacher once asked his students, ?Can anyone explain the difference between a fallen branch a snake?? No one could give him an answer. The teacher thus explained: ?When someone steps on a branch, it does not react. But, when a person steps on a snake, it will immediately strike back!?
The teacher proceeded to further differentiate the two. ?In this world, there are two kinds of persons: The first is like the snake that will instantly strike back and release its venom when aroused. Snake-like persons are covered by false ego and arrogance. If they hear negative feedback about themselves, they react vengefully. They?re very different from branch-like persons, who are patient and tolerant.
Difficulties
Spiritual personalities are similar to the branches of a tree?they?re devoid of false prestige, and they respect others. They tolerate difficulties. And, during weather disturbances, they?re willing to provide refuge and shelter to those who need them.?
Indeed, the branches of a tree provide benefits for everyone?like shade for weary travelers, and fruits for hungry animals and human beings. They?re a blessing to the planet and its creatures.
In contrast, everyone is cautious of snakes, because they bring misfortune and misery. No one wants to be bitten by a snake! Similarly, people scamper away when a person is angry and violent. No one enjoys the company of someone bitter and miserable. So, it?s noble to practice humility, patience and tolerance?and bring peace and happiness to everyone!
