MANILA, Philippines -- The chief of the government’s technical education agency has offered newly-crowned beauty queen Janina San Miguel, who has become the butt of jokes for bungling her "winning" interview, a crash course in English.
"We can provide a course of about 120 hours, four hours a day. We can also ask her normal [beauty pageant] questions, to sharpen, so she'll be more or less prepared," said Augusto Syjuco, chief of the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA).
Syjuco also offered the same crash course to all candidates of the Binibining Pilipinas [Miss Philippines] pageant, which selects the country's representatives to international competitions.
"That's a very good idea. I will suggest to the organizers of Binibining Pilipinas context next year that we can conduct a crash course [in English]," Syjuco told reporters at the Palace.
Despite fumbling in her grammar and diction during the question-and-answer portion of the pageant on Saturday night, 17-year-old San Miguel won the Binibining Pilipinas-World title, and will compete in the Miss World pageant in the Ukraine late this year.
