Howlin’ Dave, Filipino rock icon, dies at 52

MANILA, Philippines -- Howlin’ Dave, the radio DJ recognized as the voice of Filipino rock on station dzRJ, passed away Monday morning after suffering a stroke, two days after he collapsed at home and was rushed to East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City. He was 52.

The announcer, whose real name was Dante David, was the son of radio personality Uncle Nick, who worked at ABS-CBN station dzXL in the 1960s.

He is survived by sons Duane and Adam.

As host of the radio program “Pinoy Rock ‘n’ Rhythm” on RJ, David, who had a big booming voice, entertained and informed three generations of listeners with songs and interviews not heard on other stations.

His program promoted many of the performers who became the pioneers of Original Pilipino Music (OPM), led by Juan de la Cruz and Sampaguita.

“Howlin’ Dave was true to his craft,” said Ramon Jacinto, owner of RJ. “His contribution to Pinoy rock cannot be measured. He symbolized it.”

Two members of JDC lauded David’s efforts in helping popularize their music. “He was very instrumental in telling people about Juan de la Cruz. He never stopped playing our records till the end,” said Joey “Pepe” Smith. “He was the best rock DJ the Philippines ever had.”

Added Wally Gonzalez: “Nasa puso ni Howlin’ Dave ang Pinoy rock hanggang sa huling sandali. Kundi dahil sa kanya, matagal nang wala ang Pinoy rock (Pinoy rock was in Howlin’ Dave’s heart to the end. It wouldn’t have survived without him).”

“Howlin’ recently started a new Pinoy rock show on NU107 called Tapsi Rock. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame at the NU Rock Awards a few years ago,” said Captain Eddie, another rock jock at NU107.

David’s remains lie at Cinco Estrella Memorial Chapels, 349 Quirino Avenue, Sangandaan, Novaliches, Quezon City.

A tribute concert featuring bands and musicians influenced and helped by David will be held Wednesday night at My Brother’s Mustache, Scout Tuazon corner Scout Madriñan, Quezon City.
