MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will go green in her State of the Nation Address (SONA) with a Maria Clara outfit made from organic materials.
The President will don a coral pink gown made of piña fibers, its dye derived from indigenous materials used by the Philippine Textile Research Institute, an agency under the Department of Science and Technology, according to a report on TV Patrol Friday evening.
In a news conference earlier in the day in Malacañang, Presidential Management Staff chief Cerge Remonde said Arroyo had chosen organic materials for her gown when she addresses the nation Monday.
The dress was designed by JC Buendia, one of Arroyo's favorite designers.
The Maria Clara gown will have a shoulder-draping panuelo whose ends will be held together by a brooch from an old gown of the President's late mother, Doña Eva Macapagal.
The past years that President Arroyo delivered her SONA, the dresses worn by lady politicians and wives of politicians had always gotten as much attention as the speech itself.
Last year, the President arrived at the House of the Representatives in a reworked version of the same Rem Divino terno she wore at the Malacañang state dinner she hosted for US President George W. Bush in 2003.
