LOS ANGELES -- Iconic 1970s crime series "Hawaii Five-O" is to return to US television screens in an update of the hit franchise, entertainment industry press reported on Tuesday.

The Hollywood Reporter said the show, which ran for 12 seasons and 270 episodes between 1968 and 1980, would revolve around the adventures of the fictional Hawaii State Police department.

While the original show's central character was Steve McGarrett, played by Jack Lord, the new series would follow McGarrett's son as the island's top cop.

The Hollywood Reporter said as well as "Hawaii Five-O, CBS was reviving another 1970s show, "Streets of San Francisco."
