MANILA, Philippines -- A Quezon City prosecutor has recommended that an arrest warrant be issued against comedian-turned-politician Teri Onor after approval of the criminal charges filed against him by the owner of a publishing firm.
Assistant city prosecutor Corazon Romano also recommended bail of P60,000 bail for Onor.
However, Judge Ramon Cruz of Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 223 has yet to formally issue the warrant against Onor, who is facing charges for allegedly violating Batas Pambansa 22, or the Bouncing Checks Act, and estafa (fraud) as defined under Article 315 of the Revised Penal Code.
Onor, whose real name is Dexter Dominguez, is vice mayor of Abucay town in Bataan and became known for his comic impersonations of singer and actress Nora Aunor.
The case against Onor was filed by Renato Mariano, owner of St. Francis of Assisi Publication Inc.
Court records showed Onor purchased P1,115,960 worth of educational books from Mariano?s company on September 10, 2007, reportedly to be distributed to public schools in Onor?s town.
Onor issued a postdated check for P557,980 as partial payment but Mariano said when he deposited it in his account, the bank would not accept the check.
He later found out that Onor?s account at the Robinson?s Bank branch on Tomas Morato, Quezon City had been closed due to insufficient funds.
Mariano subsequently filed a case against Onor on March 6 after the comedian-politician allegedly ignored his repeated demand for payment.
Onor, on the other hand, forfeited his chance to defend himself when he did not send his counsel to the preliminary investigation.
