‘Juana Change’ blasts Charter change

MANILA, Philippines -- A comedienne whose performances on the video-sharing site Youtube as "Juana Change" are fast becoming a hit had anti-Charter change protesters at Friday’s interfaith rally in Makati City initially taken aback when she appeared to make a pitch for amending the Constitution.

Juana Change (real name, Mae Paner) pretended to be a lawmaker pushing Charter change in exchange for money, an apparent spoof of allegations the administration has been bribing lawmakers to support amendments to the Constitution, ostensibly to extend President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's term.

In an interview, Paner said the idea of uploading a video on Youtube came up when their group, the Convergence Team, felt the need to "create something that would appeal to the senses of the Filipinos.

The Convergence Team is made up of artists, lawyers, and students.

"A group of friends thought about the idea that, ‘What if, since we don’t have money, let’s do something that will tickle the people through virals’," Paner said in an interview with INQUIRER.net.

Paner, clad in a colorful, glittery terno (traditional Filipino formal gown) patterned after the Philippine flag, said they were actually surprised with the response of Youtube viewers to their "Juana Chacha" series, which can be interpreted two ways: "Want a change, Want to change" (to express hope, to call for action) or "Wala nang change" (to express resignation).

The video series is written by Reggie Regalado and the group intends to upload more videos on Youtube until Arroyo steps down in 2010.

"Actually nagulat kami hindi namin akalain na ganun kabilis kasi ilang araw lang siya naupload sa Youtube pero nakakatuwa dahil overwhelming yung response nila [Actually, we were surprised, we never imagined that the videos would be popular that fast because it had just been a few days since they were uploaded on Youtube. But it was very delightful because their response was overwhelming]," she said.

Paner acknowledged fearing for her safety, she is happy portraying Juana.

"Syempre naman natatakot, kaya lang pag nagpadala ka sa takot walang mangyayari[ Of course I get scared, but if you let fear overcome you, nothing will happen," she said.
