TOKYO -- Japanese pop diva Ayumi Hamasaki hopes to appear as scheduled on one of the country's most-watched New Year's eve countdown television programs after injuring her hand in a fall, her agency said Monday.

Hamasaki, 30, who has sold tens of millions of albums in Japan and across Asia, fell last week, forcing her to cancel a concert to have surgery on her hand, her agency said.

"She is continuing treatment to recover from her injury, but her condition is still not good," her agency said in a statement.

"Nevertheless, she strongly hopes to perform" on public broadcaster NHK's New Year's Eve countdown, it said.

Hamasaki said she fell due to anemia caused by overworking and has since been resting.

"I feel frustrated as this accident was due to my own poor self-management," she wrote on her blog.

She said she hoped to continue with her schedule, despite recommendations from a doctor to take several weeks of rest.

Earlier this year, Hamasaki revealed that she was suffering from partial deafness due to tinnitus, an illness that can be caused by constant exposure to sound.
