LOS ANGELES -- Animated family film "Up" shot to the top of the North American box office this weekend, according to industry estimates, pulling in $68.2 million in receipts.
The movie features a balloon salesman who finds his long-dreamed adventure to South America has an 8-year-old stowaway.
Last weekend's leader, comedy sequel "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian," came in second place, taking in $25.5 million for a total of $105.3 million in its first two weeks in release, said box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
The movie finds Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Ricky Gervais undertaking more night-time museum adventures, moving from New York to Washington.
Another newcomer, horror flick "Drag Me to Hell", came in third with $16.6 million.
"Terminator: Salvation," starring Welsh-born actor Christian Bale in the post-apocalyptic role of a resistance leader fighting power-hungry machines, took in $16.1 million in box office receipts for fourth place.
At number five was another franchise flick, the critically acclaimed blockbuster "Star Trek," earning $12.8 million for a whopping $209.5 million over four weeks in theaters.
"Angels and Demons" -- sequel to the hit 2006 thriller "The Da Vinci Code" came in sixth place. Directed by Ron Howard and with Tom Hanks reprising his starring turn, "Angels" took in $11.2 million.
In seventh place was "Dance Flick," about a street dancer from the wrong side of the tracks bonding with a beautiful girl to battle it out at a dance competition. It drew $4.9 million in ticket sales.
Superhero spinoff "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which took $87 million in its opening weekend, drew only $3.9 million in receipts for eighth place.
In ninth was romantic comedy "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner, earning $1.9 million.
Rounding out the top 12 was Beyonce's thriller "Obsessed," "The Brothers Bloom" and "The Soloist," all earning less than $1 million each.
