LUCENA CITY, Philippines?A foreign ship loaded with timber has dropped anchor off the island municipality of Patnanungan, Quezon, where it has been apprently immobilized for the past two days, police said Saturday.
Insp. Jesus Erickson Polinag, Patnanungan police chief, said the ship, bearings the markings ?Bao Feing ? Panama ? IMO 784211? on both sides, was sighted two nights ago some two kilometers from the island town.
Polinag said from the outrigger boat he and other policemen used to go around the vessel, they could see it was loaded with timber.
He said the Chinese-looking crewmen made no effort to establish any contact or coordinate with the police team.
?It was anchored. Its engine was not running. We?ve been trying to communicate with the crew through signals and bullhorn but they wouldn?t budge. Maybe, the ship crew do not understand English,? Polinag said over the phone Saturday while aboard the outrigger, which kept some distance from the ship.
Polinag said he believed the ship developed engine trouble while maneuvering to seek shelter from Typhoon Ramil ( international codename: Lupit).
Polinag said the local police were waiting for the arrival of personnel from the Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard for the proper course of action.
Patnanungan is located on the eastern part of Polilio group of islands facing the Pacific Ocean in northern Quezon. It sits between the main Polillo and Jomalig islands.
