MANILA, Philippines?A peek into the hidden world of brides-to-be who are kept away from public view, a journey of a Badjao father and daughter as they illegally cross to Sabah and a woman ravaged by war.
These three entries by Mindanao filmmakers are among the 10 finalists in the Full Length category of this year?s Cinemalaya competition. These are films which have 90-120 minutes running time.
Limbunan, by Maguindanaon filmmaker Gutierrez Mangansakan II, is a glimpse into the hidden world of the ?limbunan? where women who are about to get married are barred from leaving their homes.
Sheron Dayoc?s Halaw chronicles the journey of a Badjao father and daughter as they sneak through the southern backdoor and illegal enter Sabah.
Arnel Mardoquio?s Sheika, meanwhile, is a story of a woman ravaged by war in Mindanao. In search of peace, she runs to the city but violence and death continue to haunt her.
?Last year, the number of indie films surpassed commercially-made films. Our indie films continue to receive international accolades so we continue to push forward despite the odds,? said festival director Nestor Jardin.
The other finalists are Dan Villegas? and Paul Sta. Ana?s Mayohan, Kim Homer Garcia?s ?Magkakapatid,? Danny Anonuevo?s ?Rekrut,? Francis Xavier Pasion?s ?Sampaguita,? Art Katipunan?s ?Si Techie, Si Teknoboy at si JuanaB,? Dennis N. Marasigan?s ?Siya ang Mayor Ko,? and Ian-Dean S. Lorenos? ?The Leaving.?
The Best Full Length Feature film will receive a prize of P200,000 and the Balanghai.
The festival runs from July 9 to July 18.
?We lengthened the festival to nine days so it can accommodate more viewers,? said Jardin.
Now on its sixth year, Cinemalaya is an all-digital film festival that aims to discover, encourage and honor the cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers who articulate and interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insights and artistic integrity.
