NEW YORK?New York restaurants proudly display reviews in the window about the taste of their cuisine. Now they'll have to have one saying whether the food's also clean.

The city's health board on Tuesday approved the regulation requiring all the approximately 24,000 eateries to display letter grades in the entranceway -- anything less than A meaning not fully hygienic.

"New York City restaurants are among the world?s best, and these simple reforms will make them even better," said Health Commissioner Thomas Farley. "The grade in the window will give you a sense of how clean the kitchen is."

Establishments receiving a B, let alone something lower, won't be required to put the humiliating score in the doorway right away. They'll get a chance to redo the inspection within a month.

Certainly there's room for improvement.

"Tainted restaurant food causes several thousand hospitalizations in New York City each year, and as many as 10,000 emergency-room visits," the health department said.
