MANILA, Philippines?Just before 11 p.m., Shangri-La Mall employees asked people to evacuate the cinemas because of a fire five floors down at Rustan's Supermarket.
Smoke could already be seen on the fourth floor and people quickly but calmly made their way down the mall's escalators.
Outside, the scene was chaotic. Fire trucks were all around and smoke was coming out of the Rustan's area. People continued to stream out of the mall. Some wondered aloud if it was safe to go to the carpark while others stood around taking pictures of the fire trucks and smoke.
But the strangest sight of the evening was the band playing in front of Agave, the Mexican restaurant known for serving bottomless margaritas. Despite being just meters away from the fire, they did not stop playing. They were surrounded by fire trucks, sirens were blaring in the background and people kept walking past them but the band's female vocalist continued to sing "The Way You Look Tonight."
"It reminds me of that scene in Titanic, where the band continued to play even as the ship started to sink," one bystander said.
A phone call made by the Inquirer to Agave around midnight on Friday revealed little about the band. The band's name is Upclass, a restaurant employee said, and it was only their second gig at Agave.
When asked if the band was still playing, the restaurant employee said, "Ay hindi na po kasi may nangyari po dito."
