MANILA, Philippines?Sarangani Rep. Manny ?Pacman? Pacquiao and Sen. Ferdinand ?Bongbong? Marcos Jr. are supporting efforts to step up the government?s antihuman trafficking drive.
The two lawmakers were among the legislators and executive branch officials who joined civil society groups in Manila Thursday for a dialogue on the problem of human trafficking.
?A lot of the victims of human trafficking syndicates hail from the poorest and most remote towns in the Visayas and Mindanao. It is very painful to hear the stories of all of these victims who only want to provide for their families,? Pacquiao said.
The boxing-champion-turned-lawmaker said he was willing to be part of the campaign against human trafficking and offered his services as a spokesperson and endorser.
?I am willing to join this cause against human trafficking. Aside from coming up with legislation to put more teeth to fight this crime, I am also submitting myself to give talks, participate in rallies and even as a media endorser to champion the cause against human trafficking,? Pacquiao added.
Marcos, for his part, said he was ready to accept specific suggestions for a proposed legislation or amendments to existing laws that would help the government?s antihuman trafficking drive.
?We should look at this from practical point of view?what exactly do we need to do to improve our standing? We need a laundry list of what needs to be done, and which agency or institution should be tasked to do it,? he said.
?I believe that everyone is in agreement that we need to fight human trafficking. No one will oppose this except those earning from it,? the senator added.
