MANILA, Philippines?(UPDATE) An actor playing a masked gunman has been shot dead by a village watchman in Cebu City who mistook him for a real assassin, police said Tuesday.
Watchman Eddie Cuizon tried to accost Kirk Abella, who was wearing a ski mask and carrying a toy gun, and shot him late Saturday just as the actor was directed to speed away on a motorcycle, said Cebu City district police chief Alexis Relado.
Relado said the 32-year-old actor was working on "Going Somewhere," being filmed by British director Alan Lyddiard in Cebu.
Cuizon, a member of district security force which backs up local police, surrendered after realizing his mistake, Rellado added.
Cuizon claimed he was only responding to the reported presence of armed men.
"He saw two people riding a motorcycle. He approached them but the actors did not notice him, maybe because they were focused on the director," said Rellado.
But Cuizon was not authorized to carry a gun and could face charges, he added.
Lyddiard has suspended filming of the documentary about vigilante killings in the Philippines, Rellado said.
Cebu authorities were informed that it was being filmed and had even assigned policemen to guard the production, he added.
