MANILA, Philippinies -- The chair of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has lauded comedy king Dolphy?s film outfit for voluntarily excising scenes from his latest movie, "Fr. Jejemon," which had offended the Catholic Church.
MTRCB chair Mary Grace Poe-Llamanzares related in a statement to the Philippine Daily Inquirer that the film?s producer RVQ Productions, Inc., ?upon learning of the public?s sentiments against some scenes in the teasers, immediately exercised self-regulation and voluntarily deleted those evoking scenes.?
Llamanzares said, ?I feel this may be a good example where the MTRCB and a film production company have found a good accord, where the true benefactors are the viewing public.?
Llamanzares reiterated ?its commitment to uphold the public?s sensibilities in films.?
Llamanzares recalled that three 30-second movie teasers of the Metro Manila Film Festival entry ?Father Jejemon? were screened by the agency?s first review committee.
?All of which were given a ?General Audience? classification rating,? Llamanzares recounted.
She explained that, ?under the law, a decision of the review committee is final and the chair [of the MTRCB] has no power to supersede its decision unless it is appealed.? But with RVQ Productions voluntarily removing the scenes that had bothered the Catholic Church and church groups, Llamanzares has indicated that the MTRCB now considers the matter settled.
The two scenes involved the title character, played by Dolphy, giving out the sacred hosts to mass goers. In one scene, Fr. Jejemon accidentally dropped the host on to the cleavage of a woman and in another scene, the host got stuck in a woman?s dentures.
The Catholic Church has protested the scenes, saying the Church considers the consecrated host as the actual body of Jesus Christ and should not be used as a joke or made a mockery of.
