MANILA, Philippines—There’s a kind of mush all over hearts now that Valentine’s Day beckons. What would love be without a special song to immortalize it?
So here are some celebs’ “national anthems.” May Cupid hit the bulls eye so that Hearts Day won’t turn into Hurts Day. Here’s to all the hopeless romantics comme moi! Une vie sans amour est une vie sans soleil!
Zsa Zsa Padilla: “My first single ‘Kahit Na’ which was released in 1983. The line in the song ‘Basta’t kapiling ka, ligaya’y walang hanggan’ never fails to send shivers down my spine. I’m celebrating my 25th year in show biz and it makes the song more special. It has never lost its appeal.” Alfred Vargas: “‘Wish You Were Here’ by Incubus. I can totally relate with its lyrics ‘The world’s a roller coaster and I am not strapped in. Maybe I should hold with care but my hands are busy in the air.’ It reminds me that no matter how beautiful the world is, we can never enjoy it without love. It inspires me to be idealistic and brave when it comes to loving.” Marvin Agustin: “‘Iris’ by Goo Goo Dolls. I was dating this girl in Bora. She told me that when she hears that song, it would be the cue for her to get into a new relationship. So when I was asked to sing, yun ang kinanta ko for maximum impact!” Cesar Montano: “‘Matud Mo (You Say).’ My fave line goes, ‘Dili mulubad pitik ning kasing-kasing (hindi kukupas ang pintig ng aking puso), kung talikdan mo ako magpablin (kung iwan mo, ako’y maghihintay). Isaad ko na walay makababag sa atong pagminahalay akong pinangga (Sinusumpa ko na walang makakahadlang sa ating pagmamahalan aking irog). Ihaharana ko yan kay Shine sa Valentine’s!” Ogie Alcasid: “Kenny Loggins’ ‘For the First Time.’ I love the line in the song that goes. ‘I have been looking at you forever yet I never saw you before.’ It’s my ultimate song for Regine.” Lucy Torres-Gomez: “When Richard and I started going steady, ‘I Finally Found Someone,’ a duet by Streisand and Bryan Adams, was my secret song for him. I was surprised when we were talking on the phone and he blurted out that it was also his song for me. To this day, the meaning of the song holds true for both of us.” Kim Chui: “Jennifer Love Hewitt’s ‘No Ordinary Love’ is so nakaka-in love. Kinikilig ako every time I hear it especially the part that goes, ‘I was alone on this journey. You came along to comfort me.’” Gerald Anderson: “‘Fallen’ by Janno Gibbs. It’s so me when I’m in love. Even if I’m not sure that everything I do is right, okay lang as long as it makes her happy.” Maureen Larrazabal: “Randy Crawford’s ‘One Hello.’ Funny but true, the line in the song ‘Endings are beginnings of beautiful things.’ After a relationship ends, takot ako to let go then I’ll meet someone who’s much better than the last one.” John Prats: “‘Don’t Matter’ by Akon. It echoes my belief na pag may nagmamahalan, walang magagawa ang ibang tao.” Shaina Magdayao: “‘Your Guardian Angel’ by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. This line gets to me: ‘I will never let you fall, I’ll stand up with you forever, I’ll be there with you through it all even if saving you sends me to heaven.’ It makes me want to have my own angel.”
Cristine Reyes: “Barry Manilow’s ‘Somewhere Down the Road’ because I always seem to have the right love at the wrong time as the message of the song goes.”
Phoemela Baranda: “EBTG’s ‘I Wasn’t Looking for Love’ because it gives me hope that love can be found where and when you least expect it.”
