Big break for Jake

MANILA, Philippines - He transferred from GMA 7 only two years ago, but Jake Cuenca has already appeared in six ABS-CBN shows. This makes some Kapamilya artists jealous, the 20-year-old actor admitted.

?There?s a healthy competition among the actors in the network,? Cuenca told Inquirer Entertainment. I heard that some resent me [but] I try not to dwell on negative stuff.?

Jake?s first Kapamilya show was the top-rating soap ?Sana Maulit Muli,? which top-billed Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson. He was also in the ?Sweet Sixty? episode of the weekly drama ?Lovespell,? with Roxanne Guinoo, who became his girlfriend. Their love team was featured in ?Sineserye Presents: Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos??

Jake is one of the hosts in the Sunday noontime variety show ?ASAP ?07.? and is now starring opposite award-winning actor Cesar Montano in the TV remake of the 1960s film ?Palos,? his biggest break so far.

?I?m lucky,? Jake said. ?Whether or not I deserve all these, I?d like my work to speak for itself.?

The actor gave up a few other shows to concentrate on ?Palos.? He used to be a mainstay in the sitcom ?That?s My Doc? and ?Mars Ravelo?s Lastikman.?

Some scenes in ?Palos? were shot in Macau early this month. Jake and Cesar trained under fight choreographers Lester Pimentel, and Andy Yan and Ace Wang, trainors of international stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

Jake said he fell in love with Macau and promised to revisit the former European colony. ?We were there for five days. We didn?t have trouble with the fight scenes. It helped that the weather was cold,? the actor said.

The actor said he was thrilled to be working with Cesar. ?Kuya Buboy (Cesar?s nickname) gave me advice on many things,? Jake said. ?He told me to always come to the set prepared, and always strive for perfection.?

Jake and Roxanne recently announced their decision to break-up. Did Cesar share his views on matters of the heart?

?He?s having love problems of his own,? said Jake, referring to Cesar?s recent tiff with wife Sunshine. ?We talk mostly just about the show. We?re airing only for 15 weeks. Depending on our performance, management may decide to extend the show.?

Jake recently signed a three-picture, two-year contract with Star Cinema. He is also set to do a film under Regal Films. ?Palos,? by Toto Natividad, premieres today on the ?Prime Time Bida? block.
