MANILA, Philippines―Good news and bad from QTV, which is airing “American Idol” locally.
The bad news: QTV’s research department, after declaring that David Archuleta is Filipino-American, is now uncertain. QTV said that it had only one source, a blogger who claimed, “Filipinos were able to do background research on Archuleta … He’s a Filipino-American.”
Another blogger, however, insisted that Archuleta was Mexican-Honduran-Irish.
QTV’s research department still hopes to find more information on Archuleta, who’s said to be in the Top 24.
Still other bloggers have named one more boy in the Top 24 as possible Fil-Am: Danny Noriega. But a quick check on his MySpace account produced a link to a Latino web site.
The good news: There’s a bona fide Fil-Am in the Hollywood round―Ramiele Malubay, seen in the Miami episode on Jan. 31.
Likened to Season 3 finalist Jasmine Trias in the intro spiel, Malubay proudly disclosed her heritage on the world-famous talent search.
Although judge Simon Cowell said no to her, Paula Abdul called Malubay “phenomenal” after a rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “Natural Woman.”
Cowell, who had trouble pronouncing her name, kept harping about Malubay’s petite frame. Ditto Randy Jackson. According to QTV, the “20-year-old sushi restaurant waitress is only 4’11”.”
Malubay’s MySpace account yielded photos, but very little information except that her genre is acoustic/R&B, that her hometown is Kendall, Miramar, Florida and that she’s a “Pinay rapper.” There are online rumors that she made it to the Top 24.
Another Filipina who reportedly made it to Hollywood is Neyshia Go, QTV said.
The 17-year-old Los Angeles resident has been singing since age 4, QTV said, adding that Go shared the stage with Ryan Cayabyab in “World Musikahan” and with singer-actress Jolina Magdangal in the RP Independence Day concert in Contra Costa County last year. But Net reports say she didn’t land a spot in the Top 24.
