INQUIRER EXCLUSIVE
Amanda not disappointed

MANILA, Philippines?Vote for the Worst.com calls her Bride of Chucky, but this doesn?t make rocker Amanda Overmyer less grateful for the attention.

The website, which supports voting for ?entertaining? but least-loved contestants on ?American Idol,? explained why the blond-streaked, eyeliner-crazy finalist became VFTW?s It Chick: ?Vote for Amanda, because, chile, you can do that! She mumbles through her song, does crazy dancing, and basically makes a mockery of the competition by singing every song the same way... She couldn?t care less what people want her to do.?

Apparently amused, Overmyer thanked the Worsters in her first MySpace blog entry: ?I do not think words could describe how you all have made me feel. I even got the support of people I never thought would get me! Oh, chile! I love you all!?

During a recent teleconference arranged by Star World, the 23-year-old Indiana native surprised members of the international press with her intelligence, candor and level-headedness.

It didn?t hurt

?It (VFTW) didn?t personally hurt me at all,? she said. ?I mean, hell, votes are votes, you know. They weren?t too harsh on me or anything.

?The most traumatic thing to happen in my life [is] I just got voted off a TV show. But I was thankful to be there... I?m cut out of a different mold from everyone else in the competition, so I found it very warming (sic) to have had that much support.

?I was kind of surprised [to be eliminated], but I didn?t really go in with preconceived notions about what I would be or what I wouldn?t be. It really is such a crapshoot, being the square peg in a round hole.?

Overmyer believes ?Idol? benefits anybody with any kind of distinction. ?It gives us that platform to start from and get exposure, the biggest exposure that we could ever get.?

Of course winning is a whole different ballgame.

Demographics

?You just have to look at the demographics of the voters and the people watching ?American Idol? versus the demographics of your particular genre?they may not necessarily correlate,? said Overmyer.

Unlike most contestants, she had a different agenda coming into the show: ?To go out there and show America me, perform like me, look like me and see how well [that would go]. I?m not extremely disappointed I am not doing the tour. The ultimate goal is to get my own [gig].?

The Janis Joplin-esque singer plans to go southern rock if she lands a record deal. Beyond choosing a music genre, however, she admitted that her inexperience in show biz somehow left her in the dark.

Zero experience

?I have zero experience in this industry and I?m completely as green as they come,? she said. ?I?m not going to venture to say this is what I?m going to do because I don?t know what the best way to go about doing it is. I have to ask some people. I definitely want to... do the big-biker alleys, but it?s just how to get there. That?s what I need education on.?

Keeping to her own personal style helped Overmyer become AI?s quintessential rocker chick, but she knew it had limitations.

?Young kids aren?t going to relate to me as easily as they [will relate to] the other ones,? she pointed out. ?I don?t necessarily think it was the song choice [that got me voted off]. You?ll never hear me p*ssing and whining that I was first or anything like that... It is what it is. I?m not going to cry over spilt milk.?

Calculated risks

Before ?Idol,? Overmyer had been a nurse who specialized in handling home oxygen and delicate medical equipment. She said she could return to that career path if no opportunities would come up in the next six months.

?I?m a very ambitious and driven person by nature,? she said. ?I?m going to take calculated risks to achieve success, but the definition of success varies from person to person.?

She concluded, ?Success, to me, is a strong, healthy family and success in whatever job that you do. If [?Idol?] is just about 15 minutes of fame, I?m not going to chase it my whole life, trying to get it back... it?s not going to be that unicorn that I keep chasing.?

?American Idol? Season 7 airs live Wednesday and Thursday, 6 p.m., on Star World and QTV, with same-night replays on Star World at 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
