MANILA, Philippines - Jaclyn Jose is keeping her fingers crossed about reports that she is among the top contenders for the Best Actress Award at the 61st Cannes International Film Festival in France, which concludes today.
?Anything is possible. It all depends on the jury,? she told Inquirer Entertainment when asked about her reaction to the strong?negative and positive?reviews that ?Serbis? has been getting.
The Dante Mendoza film, about a family living in an old adult-movie house, is competing for the coveted Palm d?Or for Feature Film. The awards ceremony is set tonight.
Jaclyn said some critics were repelled by a few scenes in ?Serbis,? but others praised the film.
?One Czech reporter told me that ?Serbis? was his favorite. A Turkish writer said, ?We loved your film.? A French woman chased our car just to tell Dante that the movie made her day,? Jaclyn said.
Plus, she added, a French paper published a huge picture of Mendoza and the cast, and picked ?Serbis? as its second choice, after Clint Eastwood?s ?The Exchange? which stars Angelina Jolie.
At least one
Jaclyn said, ?I have a strong feeling that we will bag at least one major award. I?m rooting for Tita Gina (Pareño). Wag na tayong maghatakan paibaba. Let?s all be happy for this.?
In a phone interview on Friday, a day after she arrived home from Cannes, Jaclyn talked about walking on the red carpet, a five-minute standing ovation, and facing the international press.
?It was a wonderful to be there. That our film was in the competition was a big honor,? she said. ?It was a hectic trip. Puro paltos ang paa ko. We had to attend so many functions. The best thing was, we were given the same treatment as the big-name stars.?
Jaclyn said the festival organizers took care of the Filipino group?s accommodations, shuttles and bodyguards. She said she was made to sit down with 12 writers from different countries for interviews. ?It was crazy... [like] I was Julia Roberts in ?Notting Hill?!?
The moviegoers? reaction to ?Serbis? was unforgettable, she added. ?The theater was full. When the end credits rolled, the people stood up and applauded. That lasted for five minutes; Dante had to announce that it was time to leave the theater.?
As for her red-carpet walk, Jaclyn, 44, said, laughing, ?It felt like I was getting married, so I walked like a bride.?
