Top child stars of all time

MANILA, Philippines? Some US entertainment magazine shows have been coming up with lists of the top TV-film child stars of all time. Names regularly cited include Drew Barrymore, Macaulay Culkin and Joel Haley Osment.

Drew is praised for her sunny, sassy and thoroughly endearing portrayal of the youngest child in the family that ?adopted? E.T. in the hit sci-fi film, ?E.T., The Extraterrestrial.?

Macaulay won many hearts as the neglected but completely self-sufficient waif in ?Home Alone.? And Joel attained stardom by taking a more serious turn as the boy who saw dead people in ?The Sixth Sense.?

To complete the lists, and to make the citations truly ?for all time,? we?d like to add the following erstwhile screen cherubs who won countless viewers? hearts worldwide decades before Drew, Joel and Macaulay:

Shirley Temple

The silver screen?s moppet with the mostest could, in fact, romp away with top honors as the most memorable and popular child star of all time. She was so precocious and versatile (she sang, danced and acted like a little pro) that she once became the most popular star (of whatever age) in Hollywood. She was even awarded a mini Oscar trophy to honor her for her exceptionally winsome and winning performances on the silver screen.

After going on to act in some more movies as an adolescent and teenager, Shirley opted to be productive in other fields of involvement. She even became the US Ambassador to the United Nations!

Elizabeth Taylor

She?s still a show biz luminary in her 70s, so her involvement with entertainment has been a lifelong love-hate affair. She began acting as a lovely adolescent in movies like ?National Velvet,? and her sparkling beauty was truly enchanting to behold on the silver screen.

Later, Liz became one of the most popular young-adult stars in Hollywood, and was celebrated for her exceptional beauty. Even later, she gained respect as an outstanding actress in movies like ?Who?s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,? ?Cat on a Hot Tin Roof? and ?Suddenly Last Summer.?

Judy Garland

She was only a few years old when she joined her older sisters? vaudeville singing act?and it didn?t take her long to establish herself as the group?s shining star. After Hollywood beckoned, she starred in musicals like ?The Wizard of Oz? and ?Babes on Broadway,? and won great acclaim not just for her unusually rich singing voice, but also for her peppy and yet sensitive portrayals.

However, Judy?s fans didn?t know that her success carried a stiff price, because she was pushed to the limit by some of her producers, who made her work so hard that they even plied her with uppers and downers to maximize her output.

Not surprisingly, Judy became a troubled adult. So did her daughter, Liza Minnelli, who ?inherited? not just her mother?s talent, but also some of her psychological quirks and conundrums.
