All’s well: The music stays with Lolita Carbon

MANILA, Philippines—Perhaps Lolita Carbon is best described by her old famous group Asin’s original name: Salt of the Earth.

She likes to refer to herself as “maalat,” and her early, husky voice — now a bit gravelly — has an earthy quality.

Nene, as Lolita’s close friends call her, was literally just a child when she first sang on radio, on the “Tita Betty Children’s Show.” The prodigy couldn’t be stopped from performing with a band while still in school. An unplanned pregnancy led her to cross paths with Cesar “Saro” Bańares and Mike “Nonoy” Pillora — her future band mates in a Peter, Paul & Mary-type trio that came to be known as Asin.

While preparing to headline a benefit show on June 28 at Merk’s Bar Bistro in Greenbelt, Lolita talked with Pocholo Concepcion via e-mail:

Tell us more about your winning in the “Tita Betty Children’s Show.”

When and how did you learn to play guitar?

At age 10, marunong na ko mag-gitara. I grew up with instruments around me, kasi puro musicians ang barkada ng father ko. And of course, The Beatles.

Saan kayo tumutugtog ng One Way Up Band at magkano ang budget mo noon?

Sa Luisa & Son’s, tuwing tanghali yun at pagkatapos ng klase at 7 p.m. Kinakanta ko mga duets, like Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Peaches and Herb... Ang budget ko noon is P30. Malaki na yun.

Why did you go solo?

I got pregnant kasi at a very young age at nagtago ako for a while. Ni-request akong kumanta, but the only song I could sing and play with the guitar then was “Me and Bobby McGee” by Janis Joplin. I was offered a slot to sing regularly kaya nag-aral muna ako ng folk songs sa Jingle magazine. Sina Nonoy at Saro nakilala ko sa Taberna Filipina somewhere in Quezon City, duet sila noon at magka-alternate kami.

What did you love most about Asin?

Yung teamwork namin as musicians, the best! We used to sleep in one carpet. After namin mag-ensayo, puro comedy ang nangyayari.

What happened to The Boys na grupo mo noong ni-record mo yung singles?

Yung The Boys andiyan pa rin sila.

It took 10 years bago ito nasundan ng debut solo album mo (“Nene,” Ivory Records).

What did you like about the Asin reunion album with Pendong?

It would have been better kung kasama namin si Nonoy, after all siya naman ang may idea ng reunion album eh.

Ano ang mga bago mong natutunan nung mag-perform ka with apl.de.ap in the States?

Are you still in touch with your twin sons? Ano ang pagkakaiba nina Blue at Derek?

I call my sons the Blues Brothers.

You’ve been a musician all your life.
