MANILA, Philippines? If the rainy weather?s getting you down, there?s no better cure for the blues than ?Mamma Mia!? The screen adaptation of the long-running, incredibly popular musical of the same title, this feel-good, summery confection of a movie features Abba songs, a gorgeous Greek island, spandex and Meryl Streep.
Story
?Mamma Mia!? tells the story of young bride-to-be Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) who invites the three men, who could have fathered her, to her wedding?architect Sam (Pierce Brosnan), banker Harry (Colin Firth), and adventure writer Bill (Stellan Skarsgård)?without the knowledge of both her ex-love child-mother, Donna (Meryl Streep), and fiancée, Sky (Dominic Cooper).
The plot is a stripped down version of 1960?s hit comedy, ?Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell,? starring Gina Lollobrigida, and it?s so thin as to be hardly there. Not that it matters?this is a musical built around Abba?s songs, after all, and these perennially popular songs are what ?Mamma Mia!? is all about.
When the movie opens with its first song, ?I Have a Dream,? you can practically hear the collective nostalgic sigh of Abba fans?both declared and undeclared?in the audience.
Seyfried has a sweet singing voice and is radiant as Sophie, and Cooper matches her in charm and youthful appeal. The scenes that get the biggest laughs, however, are those that involve the older set?Streep and her two best friends (played by Julie Walters and Christine Baranski) and the three potential fathers.
Good time
In the movie, Meryl Streep shows that there isn?t anything she can?t do well, as she belts out one Abba tune after another. Throughout the movie, she exudes the feel of an actor just out to have a good time, and her enjoyment shines through.
Some of the best crowd-pleasers are ?Dancing Queen,? ?Super Trouper,? and ?Waterloo??the last, which has all the stars in platforms and sheeny, ?70s-era body suits, is possibly the cheesiest and most enjoyable thing you?ll see onscreen this summer!
