Dollywood
Hot mamas on teenage angst

MANILA, Philippines—It was a delight to be a guest again in QTV’s “Moms” with Jaclyn Jose, Susan Enriquez and Camille, a psychologist. The topic was teenage angst.

Being a certified “drama queen,” I must confess that I’m more angst-ridden than my kids most of the time. Jaclyn said, “My daughter Andi refuses to have a BF even if she already has many admirers. She thinks boys are dumb (laughs).”

As for Susan, she’s worried because her unica hija hardly speaks up. “Sobrang bait ng anak ko that I fear na baka her friends are abusing her kindness na.”

Hosts Lani Mercado, Sherilyn Reyes and Manilyn Reynes echoed the same sentiments about knowing where to draw the demarcation line between being a mother and a friend.

“The trouble with being your kids’ best friend is that they might get too comfy with you and forget that you are still a parent whom they should respect,” said Lani. Catch that episode of Hot Mamas comparing notes on how to be a cool mom.

One-woman man

“I will entertain aggressive girls,” Aljur Abrenica revealed. “But they don’t attract me at all.”

The laws of attraction only apply to his leading lady Kris Bernal in Regal Films’ “Loving You,” which opens Aug. 20.

His funniest moment with Kris? “When I suddenly farted while rehearsing for our scene.”

Since he’s now hot property, wouldn’t he rather “collect and select” than be a one-woman man? “Kris gives me all the reasons not to look for anybody else.”

Blush and all that mush ALJUR as he’s standing there.

Pre-Christmas bazaar

Tin-Tin Bersola-Babao is already in a Yuletide mood. She’s gearing up for her grand international pre-Christmas bazaar scheduled on Nov. 21-23 at the World Trade Center. (For bookings, call 0917-4218423 or e-mail grandeventspromo@yahoo.com. Expats and foreign residents are welcome, too.)

A must to beat the Christmas rush, Julius’ birthday fundraising exhibit “Art 40” was a success. “Artwork din ang Batman cake niya,” Tin beamed. “Our next project is a second baby.” Masterpiece time for the model parents!

Guess who

A notorious young actress is having an affair with a married actor. More married than happy? Is he just one of her many conquests? Will he tame her? They work for the same station. Kapamilya, Kapuso or Kalaguyo?

Juicy Fruits

Bella Dimayuga of Bellestars fame is at it again! Her newest protégé is the Philippine Juicy Fruits—Lara Beth Rebong (a.k.a. Kaymito Bayabas), Jhoana Marie Elaurza (Mangga Rambutan), Marvic Madrigal (Makopa) and Sheena Marie Fructuoso (Langka).

They were launched on NBN 4’s “Pilipinas Ngayon Na” hosted by Usec Robert Rivera. Lara is the champion in Arcalitmus Singing Contest. Jhoana Marie was a stage drama actress and dance troupe member in the US. Marvic performed in the play “El Filibusterismo” at the CCP. Sheena Marie is the first prize winner of “Wow Magic Sing” contest. Catch them every Saturday, 5:30 p.m. on NBN 4 and savor their juicy “fruitilicious” charms.

Performers’ rights

The Performers Rights Society of the Philippines (PRSP), headed by Mitch Valdes, launched “Performers Unite, Sign Up for your Rights” at Teatrino last Aug. 14. Concerned members of the Film Academy of the Philippines, Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit, Asosasyon ng Musikong Pilipino and the Philippine Legitimate Stage Artists Group collectively expressed their advocacies.

PRSP believes that now is the most appropriate time to derive actual benefits through royalty collection for publicly communicated performances as the law mandates and what every artist fully deserves. Right on, fight on!

Backtrack

I was transported back to my golden days in college when I watched “Gold” featuring Tony Hadley, former lead vocalist of the ’80s British quintet Spandau Ballet. He fired off the show with “Highly Strung,” followed by a string of their hits.

He was joined by John Keeble, the group’s original drummer, who was in his element all night. Hadley still packed a force and was indeed highly-strung.

To display his versatility in various genres, Hadley sang U2’s “With or Without You,” Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Mind” and “Rio” of arch-rival Duran Duran. He deserves a “gold” medal for keeping the Spandau spirit alive.
