MANILA, Philippines?Kapamilya and Kapuso stars recently shared the stage of the George Bernard Shaw Pavilion of the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club.
?Hannah Hits 18? was really the coming-out party of Hannah Flores, daughter of multi-awarded musical arranger and musical director Homer Flores. The debutante performed onstage with over 30 of her dad?s celebrity friends and colleagues.
The team of musicians that took turns accompanying the performers was a veritable Who?s Who in the industry. Louie Ocampo, Gerard Salonga and Mel Villena led an ensemble of 18 session musicians and 12 back-up singers, including this writer).
Gary Valenciano sang ?So Close? as 18 gentlemen lined up to dance with Hannah. The traditional 18 roses had a novel twist, with the birthday girl singing 18 duets with as many celebrity male performers.
The 32-minute medley featured ?ASAP ?08? mainstays Jed Madela, Mark Bautista, Christian Bautista, Eric Santos, JR Siaboc and Ronnie Liang, followed by Side A?s Joey Generoso, The CompanY?s Moy Ortiz, Luke Mejares, Kris Lawrence, Nyoy Volante, Jericho Rosales and ?SOP? co-host Ogie Alcasid.
Everyone cheered as Homer took the mic. Then came the ninongs: former Sen. Tito Sotto, Jose Mari Chan, Direk Al Quinn, and Philippine showbiz?s grand daddy himself, Dolphy.
Martin Nievera sang a new composition he co-wrote with Homer just for Hannah. Sharon Cuneta, after rendering a song, shared the story of how Hannah?s dad and mom Rocky met and fell in love on the set of her weekly show on Channel 13. Homer was the show?s MD and Rocky, a fresh college graduate, was on the production staff. When the show moved to ABS-CBN, Rocky resigned from IBC-13 to be a full-time production assistant and lifetime partner to Homer.
There were singing divas that evening, too. Sarah Geronimo, Rachelle Ann Go and Yeng Constantino sang a medley with Hannah.
Pops Fernandez, Vernie Varga and Regine Velasquez sang another medley of inspirational songs to serenade the other birthday celebrant, Ricardo Roqueza, Hannah?s maternal lolo, who turned 76.
Other performers were Ciara Sotto, Gab Valenciano, John Prats and Joseph Bitangcol, who danced a rousing hip-hop number with Hannah?s siblings, Hocky and Meredith.
Hannah?s fellow Trumpets members performed excerpts from ?A High School Musical.?
The real star of the night was Hannah, who wowed her guests with her crystal clear voice, pitch-perfect singing and engaging performance. More than a debut, it really was a coming-out concert.
