LOS ANGELES -- Ben Stiller comedy "Tropic Thunder," which also stars Quezon City-born Filipino-American actor Reggie Lee, topped the North American box office for the second weekend in a row, entertainment industry estimates showed Sunday.
Stiller's movie-within-a-movie about a group of actors shooting a war film in the middle of a real-life conflict zone scooped $16.1 million from Friday to Sunday in the US and Canada, totaling $65.7 million since its opening, according to box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
Lee stars in his breakthrough role as a first lieutenant of a drug manufacturing guerilla army in the Golden Triangle.
Meanwhile, two new films took second and third place.
"The House Bunny," a comedy dropping ousted Playboy bunny Shelly Darlingson, played by Anna Faris, into a snooty and clueless sorority about to lose their house, reeled in $15.1 million for the second spot in the box office.
"Death Race," a futuristic action-adventure flick starring Jason Statham as an ex-convict forced to compete in a brutal, freedom-or-death car race with prison inmates raked in $12.3 million for third place.
Shunted from second to fourth spot was Batman sequel "The Dark Knight," which made $10.3 million for a record-setting six-week total since its opening of $489.2 million.
Animated "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," the latest offering from George Lucas's money-spinning franchise, took fifth spot with $5.7 million, in its second week.
In sixth place was the marijuana comedy "Pineapple Express," starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, which earned $5.6 million, followed by the remake of a cult Asian horror film "Mirrors," starring Kiefer Sutherland, with $4.9 million.
Newcomer "The Longshots," about the first female to play in a local football team, starring Ice Cube and Keke Palmer, took eighth place with $4.304 million.
Abba musical remake "Mamma Mia!" was ninth with $4.303 million, for a total six-week take of $124.5 million, followed by action-adventure "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," with $4.1 million.
Rounding out the top 12 were Woody Allen's latest film, romantic comedy "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," with $3.0 million, and newcomer "Rocker," about a come-back drummer in the 1980s, which earned $2.7 million.
