More animated features on viewers’ wish list

MANILA, Philippines? Now that the recent animated feature, ?Urduja,? has made a good impression on viewers, what other full-length animated films would they want to see? We asked around and are happy to share these tips with prospective producers:

?Darna? would look good in animated form on the movie screen, some viewers aver. Animated special effects are spectacular when seen on the big screen, and ?Darna? offers a lot of possibilities for them.

?Dyesebel? is also a potential winner, with its ?Little Mermaid?-type prospects, more along the fantasy-romance route. With a number of original songs, too, why not?

Greater stress

An animated ?Ang Panday? would similarly benefit from the expansiveness, added power and gloss of big-screen treatment, with greater stress on action and folk storytelling.

Thinking less ?traditionally? now, other story ideas go the comedy route: They could be about all sorts of animals on a Filipino farm?or different pets in a subdivision.

How about going historical? Ceres Alabado?s ?Kangkong? would make a great period animated feature.

Satire? What about an animated update on Manuel Conde?s ?Juan Tamad Goes to Congress??

An animated feature specifically for children would be welcome by young viewers, not to mention their parents and teachers. What about a full-length animated film on Jose Rizal?s childhood?

On a more cartoon-y level, a number of Filipino and Asian folk tales could be compiled in an anthology film of short fables told by way of animation.

Spiritual themes

The popularity of spiritual themes should similarly not be discounted. What about an animated rendition of the New Testament, or the life of a young saint?

Animated features also do well when they?re used to vivify important causes, like the urgent need to protect and save the environment. So, an animated film about the harsh effects of pollution and other assaults on Mother Nature could have a strong impact on viewers, especially the youth.

To make these cautionary tales more empathetic, they could be told by an endearing child or animal character.
