MANILA, Philippines?Inquirer Entertainment asked celebrities to choose the horror flick they?d most likely watch this Halloween?the ghost and monster movies that gave them the most chills at night.
Various reasons were invoked, but the most surprising (and hilarious) came from a concert performer who picked his own horrific forays into acting.
Scary.
VILMA SANTOS
I love watching horror movies, especially late at night. But the first ?Nightmare on Elm Street? really made me scream. It?s so good. Maybe it was because I could relate to the story of kids who have trouble sleeping. I once had insomnia and would watch horror flicks until 3 and 4 a.m. My sons Lucky and Ryan inherited my love for thrillers.
DINGDONG DANTES
It?s a documentary called ?Faces of Death,? which features real scenarios that are scary because these things can happen to anyone, anytime, any day. It shows that men can be more frightening than mythical creatures and beliefs. It serves as wake-up call for us to take care of ourselves and our loved ones.
KARYLLE
?Poltergeist 3.? I was so terrified when I watched it as a kid. After that experience, I hardly watch scary movies anymore.
CARMI MARTIN
Gosh! ?The Exorcist? with Linda Blair. I can?t forget the scene where the possessed girl levitated from her bed. Actually, I think every scene in that movie is memorable.
JOMARI YLLANA
?The Ring.? It started a new age for horror movies. The scariest part for me was when the girl Sadako came out of the television set.
GISELLE SANCHEZ
My all-time fave is ?The Amityville Horror.? Instead of children?s stories, my mom would read us horror books so that my brothers and I would sleep early. Five years later, the movie came out and it was exactly how I visualized a haunted house in my mind?a home that looked like a monster from outside. Watching it now, I still get spooked even though I know what would happen next. We?re such a creepy family.
DIETHER OCAMPO
?The Sixth Sense? is very intelligent and unpredictable. My favorite is the bathroom scene?where the boy (Haley Joel Osment) had to pee in the middle of the night and a ghost passed by.
EULA VALDEZ
I have a few fave horror flicks. ?Bram Stoker?s Dracula? has some of the most romantic lines?like ?I have crossed oceans of time to find you? and ?I love you too much to condemn you.? ?The Lost Boys? boasts the coolest vampires and soundtrack. I like ?Saw? for its gruesomeness and shock factor. And ?Blackheart? because it was mind-boggling (well, at least, during the time I caught it).
ALBERT MARTINEZ
?The Sixth Sense.? I think it was created to scare adults, not kids. It touched on very adult fears?particularly of (seeing) stranded souls roaming the earth.
EUGENE DOMINGO
I?m not into horror because I get scared easily, but I like Lino Brocka?s ?Gumising Ka, Maruja? and Antonio Jose Perez?s ?Haplos.? These Filipino classics are about the unfinished business of two women from another era. I find images of wars and haunted houses disturbing. Mary Walter was terrifying in ?Maruja?; Rio Locsin, poignant in ?Haplos.?
ERIK SANTOS
My favorite horror flick is ?The Exorcism of Emily Rose.? I was so scared while watching it because I felt that what happened to Emily Rose was real and it could happen as well to anyone. Scariest part was when Emily Rose was possessed by different spirits.
MARTIN NIEVERA
My movies (?Magic to Love,? ?Shoot that Ball? and ?Always and Forever,? among others). Why are they so scary? Ask anyone (who has seen them).
