MANILA, Philippines—ABS-CBN teen star Kim Chiu emphatically denies the rumor that she's afflicted with an eating disorder.
"I'm not anorexic," she tells Inquirer Entertainment on the set of "Shake, Rattle & Roll X," Regal's entry in this December's Metro Manila Film Festival.
"I'm not on a diet," she says. "I eat a lot."
Just minutes before the interview, she relates, she wolfed down fried chicken. "I love fast-food takeout and Chinese dishes," she notes.
To make sure that she's eating properly, her management firm Star Magic has hired a nutritionist who recommended protein shakes.
She clarifies: "My handlers got a nutritionist not because they are worried about my health, but because they are concerned about those rumors. I'm not sick. I had a complete medical check-up from head to toe. I had X-rays done ... and the doctors found nothing wrong with me."
When she first won "Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition" two years ago, she was more curvaceous.
"I had baby fat. Nene pa ako noon. (I was younger then.) I guess, I'm just maturing," she explains.
She says she goes to the gym regularly. "To tone my arms. I try to go twice a week, for one and a half hours."
The 18-year-old actress says that the women in her family are naturally slim. "My sister assures me that my body would develop when I turn 20. That's what happened to her."
More than body-image issues and the monsters of "Shake," Kim admits that she's more scared about losing her career. "With every new project, you get nervous. Will the fans still support you? What if they get tired of you?"
Choosing roles
To prevent this from happening, she says it's important to choose roles wisely.
"It all depends on the story. If your project has a good story, people will watch it," she says.
Apart from "Shake," she is also sharing the screen with partner Gerald Anderson on the weekly show "Your Song: My Only Hope," where the teeners tackle more "adult" roles.
She's not in a hurry to grow up and play Gerald's wife onscreen. "That's too much."
She's also unperturbed even though Gerald gets linked with other girls - most recently, with Pauleen Luna. She recounts: "[Star Magic bosses] Johnny Manahan and Mariole Alberto talked with us. Gerald told us that the rumor wasn't true. He won't lie to us."
Is she willing to do a sultry pictorial like Gerald?
"I'll wait for my body to develop first," she quips. "If I look sexy, why not? Kung puro bones, I'd rather not. People might laugh at me."
