LOS ANGELES, California??When I answer the phone, people think it?s my 19-year-old brother,? admitted Miley Cyrus, who turns 16 on Sunday. The star of the hit ?Hannah Montana? series said that in her husky voice which can indeed make some people think that they?re not talking to a teenaged girl.

Well, this girl is not your typical teenager. Asked why she was late for our press con with her at the Essex House in New York, she recited her schedule in the past 24 hours: ?Last night, I was in Nashville, Tennessee which is my hometown. My dad and I were presenters at the CMA (Country Music Association) Awards. The night before that, I was at the BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) Awards where my dad got an award for our song, ?Ready, Set, Don?t Go.? We got here (in New York) at around 12 this morning. I did ?Regis and Kelly.? After that, I did some radio shows. The schedule was put so close together so I?m moving a bit slower than usual since I am tired. But it was fun.?

The singer-actress, who provides the voice of Penny in Disney?s animated feature, ?Bolt,? has come a long way from Tennessee, where she was born to country music star and actor, Billy Ray Cyrus and Leticia Cyrus.

?When I first moved to LA, no one could understand a thing I said,? she recounted. ?You would think I was speaking another language (laughter). Every time I would order something at Starbucks, they would go, ?Huh? What did you say?? My accent was an issue and my low voice was as well. They thought I should be more girlie. But that?s who I am. There will always be subtitles (laughter).?

Miley is being compared by John Travolta, who voices the title character Bolt, to his ?Grease? co-star Olivia Newton-John. The teen star got to co-write a song, ?I Thought I Lost You,? for John and sing it with him. John said he hasn?t seen a star sparkle like Miley since Olivia.

?It?s a great compliment to hear something so sweet from John,? Miley said of her fellow talent in Disney?s animated tale about a dog, Bolt, a TV star who gets shipped from Hollywood to New York. To get back to his owner and co-star, Penny (Miley), Bolt goes on a cross-country trip of adventures in which he meets a housecat, Mittens, and Rhino, a TV-obsessed hamster.

?John and I worked with each other when we were doing the music video for ?I Thought I Lost You? which I wrote with one of my really good friends, Jeffrey Steele in Nashville,? Miley said. ?People always ask if John gave me advice. I learn more from his example. He treats everyone with such respect that I admire him as an actor, artist but mostly as a person. He?s a really cool dude.?

Miley said composing a song for a movie was different. When she writes tunes for her albums, she lets her mind roam. ?It was the weirdest thing writing a song for a movie, already knowing the script and what they wanted me to write about,? she revealed. ?Because mostly, I let my hands be free.?

Pet dogs

Since ?Bolt? has a canine star, Miley was asked if she has pet dogs. ?I have six dogs on half an acre,? she said. ?We lived on 500 acres so bringing all those pets wasn?t easy.?

Which one is her favorite? ?I don?t want to say favorite but the one that?s most important to me at the moment is my new dog, Sophie. She?s a little Malti-Poo. I love her. I take her everywhere with me. She?s adorable. ?Bolt? shows that a dog is really a man?s best friend. Dogs have loyalty, which you can?t find in some people.?

As for her parents, she quipped, ?I change my mind every day whether I?m a daddy?s girl or a mommy?s girl. It depends on who?s on my side that day (laughter). If mommy?s being mean, I?m a daddy?s girl. If daddy?s being mean, I?m a mommy?s girl. There are times when I?m caught in between. It?s frustrating for my mom because she?s on the harder side of business. She?s the one who, if it?s not positive, whether it?s a script that I would like to do or if it?s a song, she?s like, ?You can?t do that. It?s not that it?s a bad business decision; it?s a bad personal decision. It?s something that you don?t want to put out into the world. It?s not positive. It?s not good for you.?

Tough situation

She added, ?My mom gets to be the hard one so then I run over to daddy. I go, ?Daddy, she won?t let me.? He has a side where he gets to be my friend. But there?s also a point where he?s a business partner when we?re working. So it?s really kind of a tough situation.

?I seem pretty okay but no, when I get home, I scream and I yell. My mom grounds me and it?s always better because I?m learning. I?m becoming a better person by watching my mom.?

Since ?Hannah Montana? has become a multimillion dollar franchise, Miley was asked how tolerant her family is toward her. ?I realize more and more every day how much I can get away with which is like about this much,? she answered, demonstrating how little with her fingers. ?My mom reminds me of that daily. Everyone has this perception that when you?re a celebrity, you can get whatever you want. It?s not true. Actually, it makes things a bit harder because some people don?t want to like you. People make it seem like I?m a brat and I can do whatever I want. It?s not true at all.?

When a reporter described her ?Achy Breaky Heart?-singing and acting father as a sex symbol, she laughed and cringed. ?Those words do not go together,? she said of ?father? and ?sex symbol.? Laughing some more, she continued, ?I am just saying, ?So weird.? For some people, any guy who can play a guitar is immediately attractive so I guess my dad?s got it. He plays guitar, wears cut-offs and tight jeans and that works (laughter). That?s how my dad was presented. People try to do the same thing to me but I want to be known more for my acting and singing.?

Of her TV series, which has been turned into a movie that will be released in April and spun-off to hugely successful live concerts, Miley was optimistic. ?The future of ?Hannah Montana? is bright,? she declared, explaining that she is taping Season 3 episodes. ?As I grow up, the character has to grow up, too. It?s just something that we need to do to keep things interesting. I would like to be like Madonna who keeps reinventing herself. That?s something I feel I could do with my character.?

Not that confident

Despite her aura of confidence and the ease with which she parried the reporters? questions, Miley claimed she is not that confident. ?I am still a kid. It?s hard for me to explain to other girls because they don?t have someone who puts them together every day. I wake up and I?m air brushed, put into clothes but of course, it?s my style. When I?m at home, I put on my sweat pants and put my hair in a bun. I never really look that great. I don?t feel that wonderful and confident.?

What if she doesn?t like any of the dresses that her styling team presents to her? ?I don?t wear it,? she answered. ?They give me 12 different options for one night. I can choose and if there?s nothing I like, I get something else.?

Miley, who has been linked to Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers band and lately to model and singer Justin Gaston, claimed the ring on her finger was ?a purity ring. I believe in it.?

Neat freak

On the home front, Miley replied when asked to describe her room: ?My mom is a neat freak. She was a designer so she likes everything perfect in the house. Except in my room. My room has everything all stacked up, with candles everywhere. I feel like the messier it is, the better I find things.?

Our Disney Channel princess is also Imeldific, it turns out. On what item she likes to shop for the most, Miley readily answered, ?Shoes. I like shoes a lot. My favorite are these Tory Burch boots that I have on. But my favorite shoes to buy are Converse shoes. I have probably every color of Converse shoes known to man.?

Learning experience

When a journalist brought up the issue over her provocative Vanity Fair photos, Miley announced, ?I?m over that. It was just another part of growing up. I think it was a good learning experience.?

What advice would she give to her legions of teen fans? ?Remember what things make you special and embrace those because there are so many things that aren?t on the outside that are so important and people find so beautiful.?
