Must-see for parents of ‘little savages’

HAVE you ever seen a young child in a restaurant annoyingly throwing a tantrum so loudly that you wish you could tie him to his chair? Well, that?s nothing compared to what we saw on ?Nanny 911,? a reality TV program aired on the 2nd Avenue channel that caters to desperate parents who wish to tackle chaos in their homes.

We couldn?t believe our eyes when we saw little ?savages??actually, they were five brothers between the ages 2 and 9?crying, kicking, hitting and yelling at one another (including their parents!) as they played, watched television, or ate dinner!

They simply couldn?t sit still! They scampered around endlessly and peed on whichever part of the house they fancied. The eldest boys drew lines on the couch and hopped from one chair to another as though they were in a playground!

Their parents?a New York police officer and a stay-at-home mom?certainly needed a quick fix to rein in their unruly brood. The challenge: They were to attend a sit-down dinner, to which the kids? grandparents had invited them.

So, a professional nanny was flown in from England to observe the family?s routine at home. You can imagine how horrified she was at seeing the children?s ?gutter? behavior!

She shook her head at the boys? utter disrespect for their parents, and at their ability to physically and verbally hurt one another. She discovered that it was a nightmare just to prepare the kids to ride in the family van for a stroll at the park! She also noticed that the parents didn?t agree on how to handle their kids.

After two days of taking down notes?and keeping her cool?the nanny had a heart-to-heart talk with the boys? parents and told them her observations. She then came up with a plan that detailed the children?s activities?from the time they woke up until they retired for the night. She told them that their children needed structure in their home life.

So, the kids were made to observe a ?time-out? whenever they misbehaved. Their father explained to them that they should learn to obey?or suffer consequences for every infraction, and they were made to understand what made their actions unacceptable.

True enough, the parents? open-mindedness and persistence and the nanny?s encouragement soon paid off?the children began to sit still at the dinner table, and even helped one another with the dishes, And, they started saying ?please? and ?thank you.?

Naturally, their grandparents were pleasantly surprised when they showed up: They were quiet and polite!

The last scene showed the parents weeping upon witnessing the change in their kids' behavior. They realized how satisfying it was to teach children respect!
