MANILA, Philippines?Eleven years after ?Titanic,? Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are acting together again in the seething drama ?Revolutionary Road.?
When they co-starred in ?Titanic,? still the biggest cinematic blockbuster of all time, Kate and Leo were young, vibrant and gifted, but not yet the bankable names that their breakout movie would help them become.
Today, Kate is known as one of the most consistently outstanding actresses in the biz, while Leo has finally grown up, from the trembling, overly sensitive youth of his early films to the tough action-drama hero of his more recent starrers, like ?The Departed? and ?Blood Diamond.?
Expectedly, therefore, their comeback as a screen team, ?Revolutionary Road,? will showcase their new maturity and heightened acting acumen, making the youths they played in ?Titanic? not just callow, but shallow as well.
However, we should all resist the huffy temptation to pooh-pooh or otherwise downgrade their first team-up, because it served an important purpose: It established them as the movie world?s prince and princess most likely to make it big?and, more importantly, to stay way up there, acquiring the box-office clout to be able to choose the best projects to push into production.
Many other young stars whose careers flew high like Leo and Kate?s have since been eclipsed by even younger and brighter comers?but, to their massive credit, DiCaprio and Winslet have gone from film to film with nary a pause.
They may never, ever get to star in a blockbuster as huge as ?Titanic,? but then again, they no longer want to. Their new co-starrer is much more rewardingly?revolutionary!
Didith?s story
This early, we urge a savvy producer to secure the rights to filming the recently departed Didith Reyes? dramatic, tragic and ironic life story. It?s bound to be a compelling motion picture?and a hit, as well.
Never mind if today?s movie-going generation was born long after Didith?s singing and acting career had lost their luster. Her story is so iconic that it can be both pertinent and moving at any movie time.
The significant dramatic elements are all there: Young, lovely, sexy singer with a great body and an even more seductive voice. Success both as a blessing and as a curse. Love flaming passionately, turning bittersweet, then moldering to ashes. Extravagant promises gone unfulfilled; deception at every turn; illness, financial need, the all-too-familiar downward spiral from stardom to stardoom.
And yet, throughout all those ups and downs?and downs? the no longer young singer retains her idiosyncratic temperament, and her strong sense of individuality and self. Her self-worth may have taken a beating from the cruel brickbats of fate, but she remained Didith to the very end. What a film that would make!
Who would be the best singer-actress to play Didith? ZsaZsa Padilla would be a good choice. Any other suggestions? What about a brand new talent, an ?overnight? discovery? Depending on that golden girl?s ability, that would be exciting, too.
The point is, Didith?s life story should be filmed, because it?s a great cautionary tale that needs to be told, so we can all learn from it: About the firefly brevity of fame, the delicacy of talent, the ferocity of ambition, the perils of the hasty heart, the misery of failure?and, after all is said and done, bruised and fractured though it may be, the indomitability of the artist?s spirit.
