LOS ANGELES, California? We continue our feature on the holiday plans, thoughts and wishes of several stars we interviewed recently.
Mariah Carey
Like Beyoncé, Mariah dabbles in acting. In the indie film, ?Tennessee,? Mariah plays an aspiring singer who crosses paths with two brothers who are looking for their estranged father.
She shares: ?I am hoping for peace, and for the world to turn itself around for the New Year. I?m going to be in Aspen, where I have been during the holidays for the past few years. I love it there! It?s a really fun place to be!?
Emma Thompson
With her self-deprecating British humor, the Oscar-winning actress managed to give a hilariously memorable answer to our innocuous question about the holidays. Emma and Dustin Hoffman recently earned acting nominations in the Golden Globe?s Comedy/Musical category as struggling American jingle composer and London airport worker, respectively, who find middle-age love in ?Last Chance, Harvey.?
The actress, who turns 50 next year, lives in London and Scotland with her husband, actor Greg Wise, whom she met during the filming of ?Sense and Sensibility.?
?We live in Scotland, as well, so for me, holidays are spent there. That also means I don?t wash my hair for six weeks (laughter). I go wash in the river. Last summer, we were there for seven weeks. I wore one of my husband?s old shirts and several pairs of his underwear. I washed them. They were nice and soft. I wore the shirt and underwear for the whole summer. We made hay. We planted things. We have a sauna. We swam in the river. He grew a beard, and I practically did, as well (laughter). It was most upsetting! When it?s almost time to go back to London, the beard is coming along nicely, but you think, ?I might have to shave soon!? That wild woman comes out and that?s how I live my unprofessional life.
?I hope during the holidays, we get to continue that. We?ll have Gaia, who?s going to be 9 soon. We have an adopted 21-year-old from Rwanda, who?s at Exeter. He benefits from the country life because he was a rural boy. It?s very much an extremely tight-knit community in Scotland, so it?s nice to spend the holidays there. Under those circumstances, you can?t have any airs and graces at all.
?As for 2009, it?s a difficult time. I must say that Barack Obama?s election has changed things so much. I have an installation about sex trafficking, which we?re going to open in New York. It?s the kind of activism that I?m hoping America will be able to embrace, as well, because there?s a big problem with trafficking here in the US. So, that?s a big project for 2009.
?As for my turning 50, we?re also going to Scotland for that. My plan is to make a comic film about a woman who lives in the hills, and who doesn?t believe that she?s anywhere near 50. So, we?re making a little film, together with our mates in Scotland, so that on my birthday, we have something that would make us laugh until we weep.
?To me, that would be a perfect way of spending my birthday. Laugh into the ether, you know. I plan to spend it laughing a lot. We?re making a new ?Nanny McPhee? movie so I?ve been writing that for a long time. That?s a great passion of mine?writing something for children. It just brings me great joy! Then, I?m going to take a year off. So, enjoy, because I?m not going to be back for a while (laughter).?
Dustin Hoffman
?We used to have a tradition on holidays. We went to Hawaii for a week when the kids were little. We stayed in a hotel where we could cut them loose and yet, they were still confined. Since they?ve grown, we no longer have that tradition. I don?t know what?s going to happen on Hanukkah or Christmas holidays, because our sons and daughters don?t have plans yet. They let us know at the last minute. We don?t have anything planned. I?m not a big holiday person, if I can be frank. I find it fatiguing (laughter). I always want to take a holiday after my holiday. I can?t wait to get home, and I do love being home. To me, that?s the most fun!
?As far as resolutions, it?s the same ones all the time?learn another language, study more piano, read and write more, have more massages, manicures and pedicures. Basically, do those things that I never seem to get around to. I really would love to be able to speak more languages.?
John Travolta
?Every year, we have a tradition of having Christmas at our house in Maine. It?s a small group this year.?
Kate Hudson
?I just want to take my time, enjoying my life. I?d like to see less negativity. Everybody?s negative?especially in show business!?
