TAKE FIVE
This actor’s prime goal

MANILA, Philippines—‘I will never make a movie that merely titillates viewers. I want to be known for acting in meaningful films,” declared Jericho Rosales, lead actor in the historical/romantic film “Baler,” which won 10 awards at the Metro Manila Film Festival, including Best Picture.

Jericho portrays the role of a half-Filipino and half-Spanish soldier fighting for the Spanish flag. His character, Celso, falls in love with Feliza (Anne Curtis), daughter of a Filipino rebel leader (Phillip Salvador).

“Baler” features a much talked-about love scene between Jericho and Anne, a portion of which is included in the movie’s trailer. Mark Meily, the director, said it was the most difficult scene to shoot. “Before we did it, we prepared a story board for it, similar to what production people do for TV commercials,” Meily told Inquirer Entertainment during a media gathering. “We don’t want ‘Baler’ to look like a sex movie. That’s why we placed a lot of effort on such a short and intimate scene.”

Jericho said Meily also discussed with him and Anne why they had to do the love scene. “The aim is not to excite but to show viewers how much two people, who are forbidden to love each other, yearn to be together,” Jericho explained. “I will not show my body just because I want to look sexy on screen. I want all my films to have a good and lasting impact on viewers.”

Is this because of your new-found Christian belief?

That’s partly the reason. More so, because I have a responsibility to the people who support me. I lasted this long in the industry because people want me here. I want to be a good role model to them. Ayaw ko silang maligaw. I want to earn the respect of my audience and producers. I want them to see that as an actor, nag-iisip ako.

Does this mean your roles will never be more daring than this?

It depends on the script and the director. Anne also has the same concerns when it comes to things like this.

How would you describe your love scene with her?

It’s not titillating at all. It’s natural to feel passionate about the person you love. The scene is not lustful. Pakilig lang. Nakaka-in love.

How is it different from your romantic scenes with Carmen Soo ("Kahit Isang Saglit”)?

This is more intense than what Carmen and I did on the teleserye. There is only so much we can do on TV, for General Patronage (GP) kasi. Carmen has her limitations, too. This story is different so it requires a different approach.

Between Carmen and Anne, who are you more likely to fall in love with?

If we’re going to rate the level of closeness, I’d give three and a half stars to Carmen and two stars to Anne. Carmen is very special to me. We went through hard times together, especially when Manong Gilbert (Perez) died. We became close during the time we were doing the show in Malaysia. She knows everything there is to know about me. She knows what I’ve gone through with my previous relationship. I don’t know Anne that much yet, although I know she’s a kind person. I was a bit shy around her when we first worked on this movie.

Why don’t you court Carmen then?

I’m trying to build friendly relationships with Carmen, Anne and other people I work with. I don’t want to rush things. ‘Di porke’t Pasko manliligaw na ako bigla. I don’t want it to be my reason for courting any girl. I chose to be single this Christmas. I will take this opportunity to spend time with my family.

So do you date?

I seldom have time to go out, but when I do, I try to have dinner or watch a movie. I think it’s a good way to know people. Of course, I’m also looking for someone who I think I’m compatible with.

Why do you have hesitations? Your ex, Heart Evangelista, found a new guy four months after your break-up.

Different folks, different strokes. While some people want to play it cool, there are others who seem to be in constant need of company. At this point in my life, marami pa akong kailangang ayusin. I need to be alone for now. If ever I’d have a girlfriend right now, she would have to be extremely patient and understanding.

What have you learned from your relationship with Heart?

I’ll be more careful with my feelings next time, masyado kasing malakas ito. I really cared for Heart. She will always be special to me. I don’t think reconciling with her is possible at this time. I’m hoping we still can be friends. It will come, I know it. I’m a very patient person.
