MANILA, Philippines?Maria Makiling, the diwata who takes care of ecologically rich Mount Makiling, still lives in the consciousness of Laguna?s natives.
They informed me that, whenever there are events that bring noise and disorder to the area, unexpected rains come. Maria Makiling, after all, is the protector of the mountain?s beautiful flora and fauna.
A former student of mine who once attended an art festival in Makiling shared that he saw a lady in a diaphanous gown floating sadly toward him. Somehow, he knew it was Maria Makiling. He wondered why she looked forlorn, and sensed that she was saddened by human incursion on her mountain and its subsequent abuse.
Advocacy
Last Feb. 12, the Maria Makiling Conservation Foundation launched its advocacy by declaring Karylle the personification of Mount Makiling. Esteemed painters, photographers and sculptors rendered the actress/singer as the diwata.
Prior to the painting session, an opening ceremony was held with chancellor Rey Luis Velasco, regent Ponciano E. Rivera (of the UP Alumni Association), Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos, foundation president Dr. Feliciano Calora. and a representative of Laguna Gov. Ningning Lazaro in attendance.
Dulce and Dondi Ong rendered musical numbers. As the former reached the climax of her song of praise to Nature, she raised her arms to the sky. As if on cue, golden leaves showered down on the crowd. The audience in attendance gasped in unison. Was it a coincidence?
Whatever it was, the effect was startling and made the affair even more memorable. A UP Los Baños professor whispered to me: ?Maria Makiling approves!?
