MANILA, Philippines? After the kissing and telling?and taping?comes the apologizing.
Hayden Kho, the celebrity doctor who by his own admission videotaped his bedroom encounters with women, including actress Katrina Halili, without their knowledge and consent, is saying ?sorry? for his actions.
On Friday, a repentant Kho appeared on television and said: ?I deeply regret what has happened because of my poor judgment ? All I feel now is deep remorse. I know it?s too much to ask for forgiveness, but I hope someday people can learn to condemn the sin and not the sinner.?
In an earlier statement sent to media outfits late Thursday, Kho said that ?the filming of an intimate, strictly personal and private act is most unfortunate and truly regrettable, and I sincerely apologize for the harm it has done to other parties.?
He pleaded absence of malice, and claimed that the recordings were uploaded on the Internet and reproduced in DVDs ?without my knowledge and consent.?
Halili, who accused Kho of videotaping their sexual encounter without her knowledge and consent, has asked the Professional Regulation Commission to revoke Kho?s medical license.
Kho said he had decided to ?suspend? his medical practice.
?This incident has had a mental and emotional effect on my being? as well as the victims, he said.
?The root cause of this deserves deeper internal analysis, therefore I have been undergoing professional counseling since December,? Kho said.
In a radio interview, Lorna Kapunan, Kho?s lawyer, said her client was ?undergoing therapy and spiritual counseling.?
Kapunan said Kho has already admitted to shooting the videos and that it was wrong to do so.
May file charges vs friend
?He is repentant and very sorry to Ms Halili,? the lawyer said.
She said Kho was ?voluntarily submitting? his medical license so there was no need to cancel it.
She said Kho was also considering filing charges against his friend, businessman Eric Chua, who is suspected of making the videos public.
?The fight continues?
Halili was unmoved by Kho?s apology and explanations.
?I want him punished. I want him jailed,? she said in an interview.
?I will not give up. The fight continues,? Halili said.
Halili said she was ?setting aside work for the meantime because I want to focus on the cases I filed against Hayden. I want him to pay for what he did to me and other women.?
She encouraged other victims to come forward. ?We shouldn?t allow him to get away with what he did.?
Talent manager Lolit Solis, a friend of Kho?s ex-girlfriend Vicki Belo, another high-profile cosmetic doctor, agreed with Halili.
No malice?
?I don?t buy that he had no malice in making those recordings. He bragged about the videos to his fraternity brothers?one of whom copied and leaked the videos to the public,? Solis said.
She said that she is furious with Kho for betraying Belo who was in a relationship with him during the period when most of the video recordings were made.
Online reports have compared Kho with Hong Kong actor Edison Chen whose sex videos with actresses were also posted online. Chen had to flee Hong Kong, pursued by intrigues and death threats.
Halili said Kho should also suffer, but doesn?t want him to leave the country.
?He should face us in court,? she said.
It seemed to Solis that ?Kho has yet to own up to his crime.?
?He keeps blaming other people for what happened. He blames the girls for seducing him. He blames his friends for stealing and releasing the videos. He refuses to take responsibility for his actions,? she said.
Souvenirs for romances
Kho even claimed that ?the videos are souvenirs from his past romances. Like a journal or diary.?
At least three sources have claimed that Kho has also recorded an encounter with Belo.
?That was the reason why Vicki was crying a few days ago,? said a source.
?Since Hayden assured her that it was just for the two of them, she agreed to do the video with him. But it?s tamer compared to the others,? according to the source.
Extortion angle
A Belo insider said there was an extortion angle in this case.
?Someone demanded P4 million from Belo in exchange for her video with Kho,? the source said.
Another source said that the Belo video was in the hard disk that was allegedly copied by Chua, without Belo?s consent.
Solis said Chua is in the business of selling DVD duplicating equipment. Chua owns DVD stores all over the country, the Belo insider said.
According to Solis, Kho had a falling-out with Chua and his other fraternity brothers.
Back together
?In retaliation, they told Vicki about the sex videos last December, after which Belo and Kho broke up,? Solis recalled.
When it became apparent that Belo and Kho reconciled recently, Solis said, ?Chua and his frat friends got mad and released the videos.?
Edu Manzano, head of the Optical Media Board, was earlier quoted as saying that Chua had sold the Halili-Kho video to pirates for P2 million.
Adel Tamano, Belo?s lawyer, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that he has been told by certain sources that the Belo video has been made public.
?We haven?t seen the video yet but we are confirming the existence of the [Belo] video,? he said. The lawyer also said that his client had told him that Kho had ?recorded an intimate encounter? with her.
Asked if Belo would file a case against the people who released the video to the public, Tamano said: ?She is weighing her options. But Dr. Belo isn?t a vindictive person. She just wants to clarify things and put all this behind her.?
Publicly, Belo insists that she and Kho are just friends.
But Solis is positive that Belo and Kho are back together. ?Kho?s birthday was on May 20. I?m sure Vicki?s gift to him is his lawyer. He couldn?t afford to hire someone like Lorna Kapunan.?
Meanwhile, Kho, who is facing multiple investigations, has been making himself scarce.
PRC summons
A summons from the Professional Regulation Commission could not be served because Kho was not at his Makati condominium Friday.
The PRC has ordered Kho to answer a complaint of immorality and dishonorable and unethical conduct filed by Halili.
PRC lawyer Pharson Mamalo said they were told Kho has not been staying at the Makati condo since last year but that they would be serving the summons to his other address in Quezon City.
Raymund Palad, Halili?s lawyer, said Kho?s acts were immoral and a violation of the Medical Act of 1959 as well as the Code of Ethics.
Kho did not make an appearance, either, at the National Bureau of Investigation whose anti-fraud and computer crimes division is investigating the Kho-Halili video that has been widely circulated in the Internet.
Vicente de Guzman, the AFCCD head, said the summonses were issued to the personalities mentioned by Halili in her sworn statement submitted to the bureau, including Belo and Chua.
Lawyer Jose Paolo Patajo said Kho was willing to cooperate with the investigation but did not explain his client?s absence. He answered questions with ?no comment? and asked the media to refer to Kho?s statement.
Belo and Chua similarly failed to make an appearance. Belo?s lawyer said she had clients to see and could not attend. Chua?s excuse was that he had just engaged the services of a lawyer who was still studying the records of the case. With reports from Michael Lim Ubac, Tina G. Santos and Jeannette L. Andrade
