Sharon, KC lead Star Awards winners

MANILA, Philippines?The Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) handed out trophies for the Star Awards for Movies, now on its 25th year, at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater of the Ateneo de Manila University on Thursday.

It was a night of mothers and daughters, according to PMPC.

Megastar Sharon Cuneta won Best Actress for ?Caregiver,? while daughter KC Concepcion won Best New Movie Actress for her debut film appearance in ?For the First Time.?

Cuneta and KC, however, were not around to receive their trophies because they are in the United States for a concert tour.

Snooky Serna won Supporting Actress for ?Paupahan,? while co-star German Moreno tied with Emilio Garcia of ?Walang Kawala? for Supporting Actor.

9 awards for ?Baler?

Julian Duque, the violin prodigy in ?Boses,? won Best Child Actor. Sherwin Ordoñez won New Movie Actor for ?Kurap.?

In the film section, Best Picture went to ?Baler,? which won eight other trophies?including Director (Mark Meily), Actor (Jericho Rosales), Screenplay (Roy Iglesias), Cinematography (Lee Meily), Sound Engineer (Ditoy Aguila), Production Design (Aped F. Santos), Original Theme Song (Edith Gallardo and Louie Ocampo) and Editing (Danny Añonuevo).

The only other award in the film section that didn?t go to ?Baler? is Musical Score which Jessie Lasaten won for ?Ploning.?

4 trophies for ?Yanggaw?

In the digital section, the Cinema One product ?Yanggaw? brought home four trophies?including Best Picture, Director (Richard Somes), Cinematography (Hermann Claravall and Lyle Sacris) and Production Design (Michael Español, Donald Camon, Rashem Gumacal).

Somes told Inquirer Entertainment that he is ?thankful to be given a chance to make a small film with the best actors of our time. More than anything, it?s very humbling.?

Other winners in the digital section are: Sound Engineering, Jethro Joaquin and Ronald Asis for ?Concerto?; Musical Score, Jourdann Petalver for ?Boses?; Theme Song, Joven Tan for ?Paupahan?; Screenplay, Dennis Evangelista for ?Paupahan?; Editing, Francis Xavier Pasion and Chuck Gutierrez, ?Jay.?

Special awards for Cinematic Excellence in Animation were given to the producers of ?Dayo? (Cutting Edge) and ?Urduja? (APT Entertainment).

Screenwriter Ricky Lee received the Global Achievement award given to 1982?s ?Himala,? which top-billed Nora Aunor and was declared the Best Asia-Pacific Film of All Time in a poll conducted by CNN last year.

Full force

The Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement award went to Vilma Santos.

?Full force ang mga Noranian at Vilmanian,? Lee told the Inquirer.

Manny Pacquiao was declared Newsmaker of the Year; Herbert Bautista, Darling of the Press; and John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo, Stars of the Night.

TV airing is on ABS-CBN on June 21.
