CEBU CITY, Philippines? Will GMA 7 news anchor Mel Tiangco attend the wedding of ABS-CBN news anchor Korina Sanchez and Sen. Mar Roxas, whether as a personal guest or as a broadcast journalist covering an event?
?Well, that depends on whether we are invited,? she quipped. ?For one thing, I?m not going to gatecrash.?
She hastened to add, however, that she hopes ?24 Oras,? the nightly news program she co-anchors with Mike Enriquez, would get the chance to cover the ?happy occasion.?
?It?s a big news event. It wouldn?t be right to ignore it. But it really depends on whether the other station would allow us,? she said.
On a personal note, she said that she has nothing but good wishes for her former ABS-CBN colleague. (Tiangco worked in ABS-CBN before moving to GMA 7.)
?I?m happy for Korina,? Tiangco noted. ?It?s such a happy affair for all of us. We should celebrate the fact that two people who are in love will finally start a life together.?
She said that Roxas is a perfect match for Sanchez.
?She?s a strong woman and she needs a strong man like the senator,? Tiangco said.
In the same vein, does she see herself finding her own perfect match someday?
?It would be interesting to find a man who?s successful in his field as well,? she exclaimed. ?But I am not looking.?
Tiangco set very high standards for a possible mate. ?He should be strong-willed and he should really love me because my work is quite demanding. If the man is weak, it won?t be a happy and stable relationship. He should be very secure in himself.?
Tiangco was recently in Cebu to spearhead the GMA Kapuso Foundation?s education campaign.
?We distributed school supplies and bags to 10 different schools,? Tiangco said.
Tiangco, as executive vice president of the GMA Kapuso Foundation, has gone as far north as Apayao and as far south as Tawi-Tawi in pursuing the network?s various advocacies.
?I?ve had countless memorable experiences on the road, but two that stand out are the disaster relief efforts?like the landslide in Southern Leyte where 3,000 people died, and another calamity in Quezon Province where the mud was waist-deep,? she recounted.
Those two trips were unforgettable, she said, ?because I witnessed, with my own eyes, our countrymen?s suffering.?
Her work with the foundation enriches her, both professionally and personally, she said. ?It strengthens your commitment to serve the public and, on a personal level, it magnifies your blessings a thousand-fold, while giving you inspiration at the same time.?
