Growing up in a houseful of antiques

MANILA, Philippines? Most of the stuff here are older than me,? said 22-year-old radio DJ and TV host Andi Manzano, of the furniture and other decor found in their 4,300-sq. m. ancestral home in Quezon City.

These include lounge chairs in the living area; a 12-seater wooden dining table; a collection of Lilliput Lane home models; and figurines of different religious idols.

?My grandparents loved to travel when they were still alive. They bought these pieces from the places they went to. The sofa set is 60 to 70 years old and still in pristine condition,? Andi told Living Stars. She added that her grandpa Ramon, who was an architect, enjoyed rearranging furniture and supervising construction in different parts of the house.

?When her lolo was younger, there was always something new to see in the house and the garden,? said Mrs. Rose Manzano, Andi?s mom.

The Manzano residence is one of the oldest in La Vista, an upscale subdivision beside Miriam College and Ateneo in Quezon City. ?This place offers a breathtaking view of Antipolo at night,? Rose added.

There were even members of the clan who held their wedding reception inside the wide compound. ?They would fix the garden really nice. There were lights all over. It was better than renting a function room in a hotel. It?s more personal,? said Rose.

Andi pointed to the swimming pool area as her favorite spot in the house. She invites friends, especially during the hot summer months, to have a dip.

She also enjoys playing with her four dogs ? Taguito, Coco, Poe and Bailey ? by the garden.

?Andi used to play with her dolls in the garden when she was young,? Rose recalled.

Another favored spot in the house is the annex. Currently this is where the family?s bedrooms are located. Rose explains that the annex also has a computer room, which serves as home school to Andi?s three younger siblings: Angel, 13, Isabella, 9, and Sofia, 8. Brother Miguel is 18.

The annex, Rose pointed out, is ?more functional compared to the main house which was built mainly to entertain guests.

Given the chance, Rose would like to make the family hall ?more homey.? It used to hold more than 10,0000 book titles that her in-laws owned before they donated everything to the Ateneo Library.

?Right now it?s an empty space. I?m hoping we could transform it into a TV and game room. It would be a nice gathering place for the family,? Rose said.

As Andi posed for snapshots, she said this will be the first time her fans would get a glimpse of the house. She readily supplied us with captions for the photos.

?QTube,? which Andi co-hosts with Filipino-Australian model Andy Smith, airs every Thursday, 10:15 p.m. on QTV 11.
