Lessons Giselle Sanchez’s mother taught her

MANILA, Philippines?Last week, a friend asked comedienne Giselle Sanchez about the highlight of her week. ?Damp and wet in the rain under a stranger?s umbrella listening to the priest?s homily outside a jampacked church. It was Mother Mary?s birthday,? Giselle replied.

Many who have watched Giselle?s comedy shows would probably raise an eyebrow about this naughty comedienne being ?Marian.? But, we can vouch for it. When she was a UP Diliman student, we saw her hearing Mass, then proceeding to the statue of Mother Mary. We asked her then what she prayed for. ?A show biz career and a good husband in the future,? she shared.

Good husband

Today, Giselle has gotten more than what she prayed for. Aside from a solid career and a good husband, Giselle is now blessed with two beautiful children, 5-year-old Lia and 2-month-old baby, Zappa Buencamino.

According to Giselle, praying to Mother Mary was the second of 10 important lessons her mother taught her that she will never forget. She has listed down the quotes from her mom which she will share with her children:

Family:

?When all is lost, your family will still be here for you?no matter what.?

Religion:

?No matter how rich or powerful you will become, you will have a void in your heart if you don?t have God. We were prewired to look for God and ask for his help when we need it. God?s mother, Mary, intercedes for all of us with the Lord.

Education:

?Anak, mahirap lang kami, kaya mag-aral ka nang mabuti kasi ?yan lang ang mabibigay namin sa iyo.?

Confidence:

?You are beautiful. Even if your classmates disagree, believe only what I tell you. You will use your beauty and talent to become an actress and a beauty queen. Mark my word. ?

(Giselle blocks out the beauty queen part. ?I know my limits. That?s pushing it too far,? she blushes.)

Humility:

?Huwag lalaki ang ulo mo?kapag lumobo ?yan, ako ang unang magpapaputok niyan. Kasi kung iba, mas masakit.?

Generosity:

?Blessings are given by the Lord for you to pass on to others who need them. Would you rather be the hand that gives or the hand that asks??

Self-respect:

?Never cry over men. They should cry over you.?

Vision:

?Magiging artista ka, gagamitin mo ang galing mo sa pag-arte at yayaman ka. ?At matutulungan mo na lahat ng mahihirap mong kamag-anak.?

Love:

?Kapag mahal mo ang isang tao, kahit masakit sa pride mo, matuto kang magpatawad. Which would you rather be? Miserable for life because you needed to teach someone a lesson? Or, happy because you have forgiven, forgotten and loved again?

??Mark my word, you will realize that everything I taught you is correct once you become a mother yourself.?

Now that Giselle is a mother of two, she realizes that everything her mother said was right!

Thanks to Dr. M.J. Valdecanas of the Zen Institute, Giselle regained her svelte figure only a month after giving birth. She is now back on the television and corporate hosting scene. This month, Giselle is excited about her new comedy concert, ?Back in Business,? on Sept. 17, 8 p.m., at the Pagcor Hyatt Hotel. Call 242-6397 and 245-9763 loc. 212.
