MANILA, Philippines--Our hectic work schedule prevents us from attending as many presentations as we would like, but we thank our lucky stars for recently being able to catch two special shows at the CCP and Meralco Theater.
First off the bat was a ?twofer? classical concert at the CCP, featuring pianist Cecile Licad and cellist Alban Gerhardt. We bill the intimate concert as a ?pas de deux for piano and cello,? because the two performing artists were completely attuned to one another, and their artistic rapport made their numbers together all the more special.
The result was a ravishing musical experience that reminded everyone present what deep and pure artistic delight genuine musical talent can bring.
During this fractious period in our nation?s artistic history, it was a timely reminder that spurious ?national artists? are ultimately a temporary irrelevance, and only true art will endure.
?N.O.A.H.? at Meralco
Over at Meralco Theater, the big treat last week was Trumpet?s staging of the inspiring biblical musical, ?N.O.A.H.? We were especially glad we caught the show, because it starred Carlo Orosa in the musical?s title role.
For years now, as Carlo has taken on bigger production responsibilities, we?ve missed his standout musical performances. So, we were gratified to once again savor his exceptionally fine singing voice and his musical-theater ?sell? and savvy.
As for the show itself, it was a visual treat highlighted by some magical lighting and design touches, plus a fun ?march of the animals? performed with great zest by the musical?s versatile ensemble.
On the down side, Act One was much more interesting and eventful than Act Two, which was so lacking in plot developments and complications that it had to beef up its attractions with some novelty numbers.
Despite this and other dampeners, ?N.O.A.H.? was generally a fun treat, especially for the many kids who watched the show, and we trust that we?ll be seeing more of Carlo on the musical stage from here on in. E-mail trumpetsinc@gmail.com.
Other productions to look forward to: At the CCP?s Tanghalang Batute, Tanghalang Pilipino presents Brecht?s ?Mother Courage? in Filipino adaptation as ?Madonna Brava ng Mindanaw,? directed by Nestor Horfilla and topbilling Shamaine Centenera Buencamino.
Oct. 22-25, Ballet Philippines? restaging of its hit ?Tales of the Manuvu? ballet and rock opera, featuring the company?s dancers, a rock band and guest singers. The acclaimed show is double-billed with ?Our Waltzes.?
