MANILA, Philippines? For Ogie Alcasid and Michael V, their popular sketch characters Yaya and Angelina on the GMA 7 gag show ?Bubble Gang? are real people.
Michael was inspired by old helpers at home. ?I chose to make Yaya?s accent a cross between Bisaya and Bicolano,? he says. ?Sometimes she sounds Batangueña. Our goal was to turn her into a familiar character.?
As a piece of trivia, he reveals that Yaya?s name is Rosalinda: ?If you check past videos of ?Bubble Gang,? she was named Rosalinda long before GMA 7 launched the remake of the Mexican soap opera.?
As for Ogie, he says he was inspired by real children in creating precocious Angelina.
?If you ask my sisters, they?ll say Angelina is a lot like me when I was a kid,? Ogie admits.
From his daughters Leila and Sarah, he got Angelina?s melodramatic tendencies. ?Kids can easily shed crocodile tears when they want something bad enough,? he explains.
Both Ogie and Michael take their comedy seriously.
?We studied our characters carefully,? Ogie says. ?There?s a lot of voice acting involved. It?s a bit taxing, but we love doing it.?
Michael relates that it was ?Bubble? director Uro de la Cruz who thought of the Yaya and Angelina sketch. ?We wanted to make a commentary on parents who neglect their kids who in turn become closer to their nannies,? says Michael.
Now, Yaya and Angelina are hitting the big screen in GMA Films and APT Entertainment?s ?Yaya and Angelina: Spoiled Brat the Movie.?
The trick was stretching a 10-minute sketch into a full-length movie, ?but with a solid story as spine,? Michael explains.
Another challenge was the makeup.
?Since we are using Red high-definition camera, our makeup should be high definition, too,? Michael quips. ?We used wax on my eyebrows so it would look plucked.?
