MANILA, Philippines?A mystery-fantasy that follows the journey of two supposed healers; a horror-drama about a mysterious landlady and her tenants; a comedy about a woman?s excesses and shortcomings; romance between a girl and a deaf boy; and an inspiring tale of two children and a dog.
These works comprise the 2009 Cinema One Digital Film Festival which runs from Nov. 13 to 17 at the Gateway Mall Cinemas, Araneta Center, Quezon City.
The film fest is part of the 15th anniversary of the movie cable channel Cinema One, director for programming Ronald Arguelles told Inquirer Entertainment on Tuesday. The awards ceremony will be held on Nov. 15 at the Dolphy Theater in the ABS-CBN compound, Quezon City.
?Bala Bala?
In the film ?Bala Bala??which derives its title from the Batangueño dialect and means ?kunwari? in Tagalog?Fredrick Aguila visits the epidemic-stricken area of Dagatan, San Jose, Batangas to find out why the live stocks are dying. Soon he discovers the barrio?s secrets and gets trapped with the town folks? belief that he?s a healer.
The story has ?mystery and fantasy that?s presented in reality,? says writer and director Melvin Brito. It features Richard Quan, Glenda Resureccion, Tom Olivar, Rold Marn Salamat, Jao Mapa, Angel Jacob and Micah Muñoz.
?Wanted: Border?
Religious fanatic Mama Saleng owns a boarding house and eatery. As a child she was suspected of being an aswang (witch), along with her grandmother. As her boarders disappear one by one, more suspicions arise: Does she butcher them and eat their flesh?
The film?s message, according to director Ray Gibraltar is ?Let?s all help end the cycle of violence.? It stars Rosanna Roces, Kristoffer Rhys Grabato, Sunshine Teodoro, Marisol Alquizar and Raffy Tejada.
?Maximus & Minimus?
?Maximus & Minimus? is the story of Max, an obese woman with a ton of confidence, a hefty bank account and a healthy sex life. Life is sweet to her, but one day she starts to doubt many things from the crucial to the trivial, down to her waistline.
The film?s cast includes Cai Cortez, Baron Geisler, Mikel Campos, Malou Crisologo, Kimmy Macatlang and Liza Lorena. It is directed by Nap Jamir and written by Jimmy Flores.
?Paano Ko Sasabihin??
?Paano Ko Sasabihin?? (written and directed by Richard Legaspi) features Enchong Dee and Erich Gonzales in a romantic comedy about a chance meeting between two strangers who can ?hear? the call of love within their hearts.
The film asks: What if the attractive deaf guy you meet inside the train thinks you, too, are deaf?
?Si Baning, Si Maymay at ang Asong Si Bobo?
The film is about 6-year-old Baning, who?s eager to learn her Abakada, and the distractions that affect her young mind. Subplots include a dog named Bobo; Baning?s sibling rivalry with Paeng; and her mother?s fixation with the drunkard next door.
Directed by Rommel ?Milo? Tolentino, it features Rio Locsin, Geraldine Tan, Simon Ibarra, Gene Karley Largueza, Joanna Jean Evangelista and Jan Harley Hicana.
The film fest will also screen past winners and selected works by multi-awarded directors Danny Zialcita and Brillante Mendoza.
