OUT OF THE CLOSET
Confessions of a teenage shopaholic

NEW VIVA SINGER TRIZ Reyes is a self-confessed shopaholic.

It didn’t help that the Reyes family home in Cerritos, California, was only five minutes from the mall. As such, it was easy for mom Beth and dad Rey to indulge their 16-year-old unica hija’s shopping urges.

Triz quips, “I’d tell dad, the mall is calling my name. There’s a sale!”

When the family moved back to Manila, Triz brought home 20 balikbayan boxes filled with her stuff.

But the Miss Teen Philippines-USA 2007 title holder can also be a practical shopper. She scours bargain bins for vintage DVDs and once visited Quiapo to buy a Filipiniana costume for school.

Her advice to other girls: “Dress your age. Your style should reflect your personality. Have fun with your clothes.”

Shoes

“My friends call me Imelda, but I’m not really Imeldific,” Triz says, pointing out that she has only 36 pairs—neatly lined up on a rack by her bedroom door.

“I’m comfortable in either heels or tennis shoes,” she notes. She can easily shift from Nike to Michael Kors, from Reebok to Juicy Couture.

Her latest faves are dunks, “which skateboarders and hip-hop dancers wear.”

Bags

Her bag collection can daunt (and inspire envy in) women twice her age.

Last she counted, she had 32 in various styles, shapes, sizes and colors. Most of these are from the teen line Juicy Couture. She bought her first JC when she was 13, and has been hooked since.

She’s open to other designer labels as well. Her mom has given her a Chanel purse; her dad, a Louis Vuitton clutch and tote.

Each JC bag comes with matching wallet, Triz notes.

Charms, watches, bangles

JC merchandise includes a line of charms, bracelets, bangles, watches, necklaces and other trinkets. Quite naturally, Triz has accumulated a treasure trove of these accessories, too.

She loves her pink JC watch, and her gold and silver JC charms.

“I have about 20 charms and bracelets,” says Triz. “I love heart charms because they capture my personality. I’m very loving and caring towards my family and friends.”

Earrings, rings

Although she dons … again, JC studs, she also wears huge fancy rings and earrings.

“I go for rings in rainbow colors, so I can match them with different outfits,” she says. “Rings and earrings add spice to my wardrobe.”

She was delighted to find hand-shaped ring organizers in Quiapo. “I don’t like mess,” Triz says. “I know that my bedroom looks like a department store, but I like things organized.”

Gowns, dresses

Did we say she shops in Quiapo? For her school’s “Linggo ng Wika” celebration, she bought a red terno there.

“It cost P1,500. My mom wanted a discount, so I sang ‘Ikaw’ for the vendor who gave it to us for P1,200,” she recalls gleefully. She also wore the terno in the music video of her CD’s title track, “Isang Simpleng Kanta.”

For shows, she’s partial to Bebe clothes for their youthful yet elegant style. She has started buying dresses online, too.

Jeans, shirts, swimsuits

When she sang as a front act for Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz III’s concert in San Diego, she wore beaded Arielle Agasang jeans.

Since then, she’s been going to Arielle, though of course she also has Juicy Couture jeans, T-shirts, swimsuits, in her crammed closet.

Hats

As illustrated in the music video of “Isang Simpleng Kanta,” she adores headgear. “My dad told me that wearing hats makes me stand out in a crowd, makes me look unique.”

Taking dad’s tip to heart, she has bought fedoras, caps and berets. Latest addition to her collection is a beret from Italy, where she recorded six tracks of her CD with US producer Christian De Walden.

Scents

When it comes to fragrances, she’s partial to fruity, fresh scents. “My favorite is Escada Moon Sparkle. I was just browsing in the mall and it caught my eye. I liked that it’s pink!”

Fortunately, she loved its scent, too. Another gamble that paid of is Harajuki Lovers, which comes in cute Japanese doll bottles. “A family friend collects Harajuki—there are different kinds. I chose Harajuki Lovers Music because I’m a singer. Luckily, I also liked it.”

Other scents on her dresser are Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, Vera Wang Princess, Bulgari, Coco Chanel, Incanto, Prada and DKNY.

DVDs

Although she’s young, she’s addicted to vintage musicals from MGM. “I was channel-surfing one day and caught ‘Top Hat,’” she says.

That started her romance with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies, along with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland musicals.

“I love how old Hollywood movie stars performed. They were a triple treat: They sang, danced and acted.”
