TAKE FIVE
Directing dad

MANILA, Philippines? Eric Quizon directs his famous dad, Dolphy, in the film ?Nobody, Nobody ? But Juan,? about a homesick old man living in the United States.

Eric says he sees nothing wrong with American children leaving their parents in facilities for the elderly.

?I think it?s better to put beloved elders in a place where they can be better cared for. If you?re in America and you?re working, it?s the most practical setup. As much as you?d want to be by their side all the time, you have to work to survive,? Eric told Inquirer Entertainment during a media gathering recently. ?On the other hand, imagine if you?re 70 and you?re alone at home ? At least when you?re in a facility, you have people to socialize with; May kalaro ka ng bingo.?

In the film, Juan (Dolphy) lives in a nursing home in Chicago. To entertain himself, he watches ?Wowowee? on The Filipino Channel (TFC). His love for the show rubs off on his friends in the nursing home, much to the chagrin of Juan?s strict son (Eric) who runs the nursing home. It is Juan?s wish that, through ?Wowowee,? he could reconnect with his loved ones in the Philippines, especially his first love, Aida (Gloria Romero), whom he lost touch with during the World War II.

What was it like working as your dad?s director?

I discovered that my dad is still very sharp. For someone who?s 81, he is still able to effectively deliver his lines. Tita Glo told me how brilliant my dad was when they were younger.

How did you come up with the story?

It started with an idea from my friend Joe Aldeguer. I was visiting my mom in San Francisco when Joe called. He said he watched ?Slumdog Millionare? and was very inspired by it.

Is it tougher to work with your dad, compared to other actors?

Not at all. He?s one of the easiest actors to work with. We collaborate a lot. I?ve worked with people who were not of dad?s stature, pero mas maarte pa sila.

What do you like most about making festival movies with your dad?

Like Dad, I have a very good track record when it comes to festival films. I won Best Actor award for ?Juan Tamad? and ?Crying Ladies.? ?Markova? won for Epy (Quizon, his brother) an award at the Brussels International Film Festival. ?Mano Po,? ?Home Along Da River? and ?Happy Together? were top-grossers. But making a festival entry is more difficult compared to regular films because you have a deadline. Maraming requirements.

?Nobody, Nobody But ? Juan,? an official entry to the 2009 Metro Manila Film Festival. It is written by Bibeth Orteza and produced by Kaizz Ventures with RVQ Productions, and also features Eugene Domingo, Heart Evangelista, Eddie Garcia, Willie Revillame and G Toengi.
