THERE?S a new tune on the radio urging listeners to get involved in its message. The song, ?Stand Up,? confronts pains and fears resulting from recent disasters.
Some 47 Filipino musicians from different record labels performed on the song?written in response to the damage wrought by Storms ?Ondoy? and ?Pepeng.? Penned by Kjwan?s Boogie Romero and arranged by Mark Laccay, ?Stand Up? seeks to spread greater awareness on the reality of climate change.
At the launch of the ?Stand Up? video held in Alliance Française de Manille, Illac Diaz of My Shelter Foundation said his group initiated the making of the song to call wider attention to the limited defenses, especially of the poor, against the prospect of more severe weather disturbances in the near future.
Diaz added that he?s also responding to the challenge by helping create new designs for Filipino homes that can withstand the elements. The services of some 50 prominent structural designers around the world have been drafted to the cause.
At the video launch, former Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Elisea ?Bebet? Gozun discussed waste segregation and water conservation to help curb the adverse impacts of climate change.
A number of the artists in the song were themselves Ondoy victims and willingly joined the project.
Carlo Magno of the Out of Body Special recounted personal losses due to the floods. When he showed up on the first day of recording, he said he felt awkward in the company of ?great talents.? But the group?s warm welcome and camaraderie took away his anxiety.
Kjwan?s Marc Abaya said, ?We strongly believe in the song?s advocacy. Our participation is our little contribution to get others involved in adapting to climate change. We need to act before things get worst.?
Actor Epi Quizon, who co-produced the song, said he joined the project because it?s different from other campaigns he?s been part of. ?Instead of handing dole-outs, the proponents will build homes that are resilient against the elements,? he explained. ?They are providing real solutions to a larger problem that leads to mass poverty and even unnecessary death.?
