First-class all the way for Yaya

ON THE FIRST NIGHT OF THE wake for her beloved nanny, Yaya Luring, at the Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park on Sunday, Sharon Cuneta was spotted rifling through old photographs.

She noticed Yaya Luring?s snapshot in Martha?s Vineyard. Also the one where the nanny shared a limousine ride with friends.

Later, Sharon??Mega? in the biz?searched computer files, again for old photographs.

Sharon personally took charge of the arrangements at Santuario, with the help of a few friends.

She skipped the premiere of her latest movie, ?Mano Po 6: A Mother?s Love? that same night, so she could attend to the visitors at the wake, among them ABS-CBN?s Johnny Manahan and Mariole Alberto, Unitel?s Tony Gloria, singer Mark Bautista, production designers Manny Morfe and Danny Cristobas, brother-in-law Anthony Pangilinan and wife Maricel Laxa, and former leading man Richard Gomez.

Sharon?s husband, Sen. Francis Pangilinan, and daughter KC Concepcion attended the premiere in her stead. The senator read Sharon?s message, in which she dedicated the movie to Yaya Luring, her faithful companion/chaperone for 40 years.

As celebrity-nanny, Yaya Luring, or Loreta Benitez, was a fixture in Mega?s tapings, shootings, recordings and concerts. She was always within earshot, ready with a bottle of Pei Pa Koa (Chinese remedy for sore throat).

Yaya?s youngest sister, Nena Antoniano of Pasay, who was at the wake, told the Inquirer that her ?Manang? was ?mabait.?

Antoniano recalled that even in her later years, Yaya Luring?who would have turned 84 on Jan. 13?insisted on visiting relatives in their Pasay home, commuting on her own from Mandaluyong to Malibay.

Yaya would invariably get lost and Sharon would get upset, Antoniano recounted, but the stubborn octogenarian would have it no other way. She thought nothing of riding buses and jeepneys, though on her travels with Mega, she?d often fly business class and stay in five-star hotels, like the Waldorf Astoria in New York.

But Yaya remained shy, Antoniano said. It took some time before Sharon could convince her to appear in a commercial.

Yaya eventually starred in three TV commercials, according to Sandra Chavez, Mega?s business manager.

After the four-day wake at Santuario, a burial in Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig City is set today.

Heritage, also famous as a memorial park for celebrities, is where action star Rudy Fernandez is buried.

It?s first-class all the way for Yaya Luring.
